Chapter 5 - The Emergency Form
Vanessa denied saying Ethan was supposed to give Sophie away.
“I told her Ethan once asked me to help.”
“With what?”
“Taking care of her.”
Claire wanted precision.
“When?”
“Hotel.”
Ethan looked genuinely confused.
Then Vanessa produced photocopy.
TEMPORARY FAMILY CARE AUTHORIZATION.
Child:
UNBORN FEMALE CHILD OF CLAIRE BENNETT.
Primary parent:
ETHAN BENNETT.
Temporary alternate caregiver:
VANESSA REED.
Signed by Ethan.
Claire nearly stopped breathing.
“What is this?”
Ethan stared.
“I don't remember signing that.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You signed it in Room 814.”
Forensic examination later suggested Ethan’s signature genuine.
Was Vanessa legally guardian?
No.
Document was informal emergency authorization, never filed, never activated, and did not override Claire’s parental rights.
But why did it exist?
Ethan remembered gradually.
During hotel meeting, Vanessa convinced him first report might mean Claire had hidden paternity issue.
Then contractions worsened.
Hotel roads were flooded.
Ethan panicked.
Vanessa offered to help if Claire needed emergency transport.
Unknown woman in uniform supplied form, claiming hotel medical team required alternate emergency contact in case Ethan accompanied Claire and newborn needed separate transport.
Ethan signed without reading carefully.
A terrible lapse.
Why Vanessa’s name?
Because she was physically present.
Claire stared at husband.
“You put your ex-girlfriend on paperwork for our unborn daughter while I was in the next room.”
“Yes.”
“Did you ever tell me?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because it never became active and I was ashamed.”
That was not enough.
Vanessa saw document differently.
She had kept it for four years.
Why?
“Because it meant something.”
Claire shook head.
“It meant he panicked.”
Vanessa’s eyes turned hard.
“It meant he trusted me.”
Ethan snapped:
“I trusted whoever was standing there while I was terrified.”
Vanessa flinched.
That landed.
Then investigator found form origin.
Not Grand Meridian.
Template belonged to:
St. Matthew Family Services.
The hospital where Sophie was born.
How did unknown hotel woman possess hospital form before ambulance was called?
Someone knew Claire would go to St. Matthew.
Maybe because obstetrician privileges there.
Not hard.
But document identifier had been generated at 9:31 p.m.
More than an hour before Claire’s first contraction.
Claire stared.
“Someone prepared a form for Sophie before we knew she was coming that night.”
That changed everything.
Then forensic metadata showed user account that generated it.
Initials:
V.R.
Vanessa Reed.
Vanessa recoiled.
“I didn't.”
Ethan looked at her.
“Your account?”
“I never worked for St. Matthew.”
Investigator corrected:
Vanessa had been hospital marketing contractor five years earlier.
Her credentials were supposed to be deactivated.
Someone reused them.
