Chapter 6 - Who Expected Vanessa?

Vanessa rented Room 814 two weeks before gala.

So someone could know.

Who?

Reservation made in her own name.

No secret.

Unknown woman might have tracked attendee and hotel booking.

But why?

Ethan began to suspect Vanessa orchestrated everything and now pretended confusion.

Claire suspected same.

Vanessa became furious.

“If I planned it, why would I use my own credentials?”

“To make document look legitimate.”

“I could have used anybody’s.”

“You wanted to be named caregiver.”

Vanessa stared at Claire.

“Yes.”

That admission stunned room.

“I wanted Ethan back. I wanted him to look at you and doubt. I wanted him to remember what we had.”

Claire’s voice remained steady.

“But did you fake the report?”

“No.”

“Did you arrange the form?”

“No.”

“Did you know report was false?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“When did you know?”

“The next afternoon.”

Claire’s anger rose.

“You found out after Sophie was born.”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell Ethan?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“Because he'd already chosen you.”

There was ugly honesty in it.

So Vanessa exploited report after learning it was false.

But she may not have created it.

Ethan asked:

“How did you learn?”

Anonymous text:

REPORT 814 WAS A TEST. DO NOT CONTACT BENNETTS AGAIN.

Vanessa kept screenshot.

Sender untraceable.

It arrived at 3:17 p.m. following day.

She realized someone had used her.

But instead of warning family, she stayed silent.

Why return four years later?

Vanessa claimed Ethan contacted her six months ago.

Ethan immediately denied.

She produced messages.

FROM ETHAN:

I NEED TO KNOW WHAT ELSE HAPPENED THAT NIGHT.

DON’T CALL CLAIRE.

Meet me Thursday.

Ethan’s number.

His account.

Forensics showed messages came from cloned SIM profile.

Not his phone.

Someone had been impersonating Ethan to Vanessa.

For six months.

Vanessa believed emotional door reopened.

Whoever messaged knew hotel secret.

Knew Sophie’s birth.

Knew Claire did not know.

And encouraged Vanessa’s obsession.

Then Vanessa showed final message received that morning:

IF YOU WANT THE LIFE HE PROMISED YOU, SOPHIE HAS TO LEAVE THAT HOUSE TODAY.

Claire went cold.

“That's why you tried to take her.”

Vanessa looked ashamed but defensive.

“I thought Ethan sent it.”

“You tried to remove my four-year-old because of a text?”

“He said Sophie wasn't safe.”

“Did you ask Ethan?”

“No.”

“Did you ask me?”

“No.”

Vanessa’s obsession had made her easy to manipulate.

Again.

Then Sophie’s bedroom security camera revealed Vanessa had brought backpack.

Inside:

child clothes.

Snacks.

Passport-size photo of Sophie.

And train ticket to Philadelphia.

Claire stared.

“You were going to take her out of state.”

Vanessa whispered:

“I thought Ethan would meet us.”

No one excused it.

Police became involved.

Vanessa faced consequences.

But before she was escorted away, she turned to Claire.

“There’s something Ethan still hasn't told you.”

Ethan’s expression hardened.

Vanessa smiled through tears.

“He came back to Room 814 after Sophie was born.”

Claire slowly looked at husband.

“And this time,” Vanessa said, “he came alone.”
