Chapter 3 - Claire’s Missing Bag

Claire remembered losing that bag.

Only now did she realize she had forgotten it because the night had become chaos.

The bag contained insurance documents, prenatal records, toiletries, Sophie’s first outfit, and a sealed envelope from Claire’s obstetrician.

Ethan had later told her hotel staff delivered it to hospital.

Apparently not immediately.

Security showed woman entering Room 814 with it.

Why?

Hotel employment records contained no matching staff member.

Uniform was real.

Person wasn’t.

Vanessa insisted she had never seen woman before that night.

“She knocked and said Ethan needed to see something before the baby came.”

“Why were you in Room 814?”

Claire asked.

Vanessa smiled faintly.

“Because I rented it.”

“You just happened to rent room beside us?”

“No.”

Ethan stared at her.

Vanessa continued.

“I knew you were attending gala.”

Claire’s skin crawled.

“You were watching us?”

“I wanted to speak to Ethan.”

“You stalked my husband to a hotel.”

“I wanted closure.”

“You rented room next door to his pregnant wife.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“I loved him.”

“That isn't an answer that makes this better.”

No.

It made it worse.

Vanessa claimed woman arrived around 10:55 and handed her envelope.

Inside was a prenatal paternity screening report.

Mother:

CLAIRE BENNETT.

Expected father:

ETHAN BENNETT.

Conclusion:

PATERNAL MARKERS INCONSISTENT.

Vanessa understood instantly what it could do.

Instead of giving it to Claire—

she called Ethan.

Claire asked:

“Why not me?”

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because I wanted him to choose.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

There it was again.

Choice.

Claire turned to husband.

“Did you?”

“Not the way she's saying.”

Vanessa laughed.

“He was shaking.”

“Vanessa.”

“He asked me if I'd known all along.”

“That’s enough.”

“He asked if you were lying to him.”

Claire looked at Ethan.

He didn't deny it.

“And then?”

Vanessa leaned back.

“He said if the report was real, everything changed.”

“That isn't a promise.”

“No.”

Vanessa’s eyes settled on Ethan.

“The promise came afterward.”

Before Claire could demand it, investigator entered with recovered metadata from report.

Laboratory listed:

Northbridge Genetics.

Real company.

But Northbridge denied generating document.

Report number belonged to different patient.

A woman named:

Clara Benton.

Not Claire Bennett.

Similar names.

Claire’s heart began pounding.

Was report simply altered?

Possibly.

But original patient Clara Benton had prenatal testing that same week.

And her expected father—

was excluded.

Someone had taken a real non-paternity report and replaced identifiers.

Claire looked at Vanessa.

“You knew?”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“I didn't then.”

“Did you learn later?”

Silence.

Claire stepped closer.

“Did you learn later, Vanessa?”

Still nothing.

That silence answered enough.

Then investigator added:

There was something else inside Claire’s hospital bag when it finally reached St. Matthew.

A second laboratory envelope.

Unopened.

Addressed not to Claire.

To Ethan.

The hospital had scanned it into chart.

Claire had never seen it.

Ethan’s face went white.

May you like

Because apparently—

he had.
