Chapter 14 - What Julia Did
Julia confessed enough to make story ugly without making it monstrous.
She had spent twelve years trying prove Project Eight used Samuel’s blood without consent.
Her father died believing Bennett family erased his complaint.
Henry privately admitted sample substitution before death but refused public release until claimant privacy framework established.
Julia did not trust another delay.
When Claire became pregnant, Julia saw opportunity.
If fetal sample could be compared against old “Ethan Bennett” profile, mismatch might prove profile belonged another Bennett relative.
She arranged unauthorized cross-reference through old Daniel Cross credentials.
That was serious.
She did not physically alter Claire’s blood.
She did not harm Sophie.
She accessed data.
Cross-reference showed old profile incompatible with direct paternal transmission expected from Ethan’s actual family records.
That supported sample substitution.
Julia sent finding to Marcus.
But to trigger Henry’s sealed file, she converted discrepancy into fake paternity-format report.
She intended Marcus to take it to family attorney, create formal dispute, open file, then immediately reveal manipulation.
Reckless.
Unethical.
Potentially criminal.
But not designed to destroy marriage.
Then Marcus panicked.
He believed report could devastate Ethan if handled during gala.
Margaret told him resolve quietly.
Laura carried it.
Vanessa intercepted emotionally.
From there private grievance became family catastrophe.
Claire asked Julia:
“Did you know Vanessa was next door?”
“No.”
“Did you know Ethan had history with her?”
“No.”
“Did you generate Vanessa’s caregiver form?”
“No.”
Vanessa had already admitted that.
“Did you send cloned messages four years later?”
“No.”
That was separate.
Who resurrected secret now?
Digital tracing finally reached source.
Vanessa herself.
Not all messages.
The first three “Ethan” messages came from prepaid service Vanessa created.
She had been messaging herself?
Partly.
She admitted sending some to fabricate evidence Ethan wanted contact.
But the final message—
IF YOU WANT THE LIFE HE PROMISED YOU, SOPHIE HAS TO LEAVE THAT HOUSE TODAY—
was not hers.
Someone hijacked same spoof account.
Who?
No trace yet.
Claire’s blood ran cold.
Someone had watched Vanessa’s obsession and pushed her exactly when it became dangerous.
Who knew she had built fake Ethan messages?
Only one person.
Her therapist?
Attorney?
No.
Vanessa had told a private online support contact under username MERIDIAN814.
A person calling themselves:
REDROOM.
They had spoken for months.
REDROOM encouraged her:
He chose Claire because she trapped him.
Sophie belongs with the parent who tells truth.
Make Ethan confront promise.
Vanessa thought it was another betrayed woman.
Investigators believed deliberate grooming.
Who was REDROOM?
Unknown.
Then one archived chat stood out:
Ask Ethan what Marcus found after Sophie was born.
He still has the original bracelet.
Bracelet?
Ethan looked confused.
Then remembered.
Sophie’s hospital ID bracelet.
He had kept it in baby box.
They retrieved it.
On inside, beneath printed name:
SOPHIE BENNETT.
A handwritten code:
S8-17.
Julia went pale.
“That isn't Project Eight.”
“What is it?”
“I've never seen it.”
Margaret Bennett had.
Her face changed.
“Where did Sophie get that bracelet?”
“St. Matthew.”
Margaret whispered:
“S8-17 is Henry’s private archive code.”
Ethan stared.
“For what?”
Margaret said:
“Not paternity.”
“Then what?”
