Chapter 8 - Adrian’s Lie

Adrian admitted photograph was real.
But date mattered.
He entered Hawthorne archive six months before Claire’s pregnancy.
Why?
Nathan Mercer hired him as attorney.
Nathan had discovered Charles Bennett sample was scheduled for destruction under retention policy.
Charles’s estate had requested preserve for ongoing hereditary study.
Authorization disputed.
Adrian went to supervise transfer to independent storage.
So he did not steal B-17.
He witnessed transfer.
Chain-of-custody showed sealed sample delivered to Northbridge Medical Repository.
Why lie?
Because his representation of Nathan was confidential and embarrassing once paternity report implicated both.
He feared Ethan would think conspiracy.
Again silence created worse appearance.
Then Northbridge confirmed B-17 remained sealed.
It had never been used for Claire pregnancy or fake report.
So why sender invoked it?
To make threat credible.
Someone knew old Bennett secrets and stitched them into new lie.
Then investigator found paternity report PDF metadata.
Created on laptop registered to:
Morgan Event Strategies.
Claire froze.
Morgan was her maiden surname.
But company?
Owned by:
Rachel Morgan.
Claire’s cousin.
Not hidden sister.
No genealogy twist.
Rachel, forty, ran event-planning company and organized ballroom reception.
She had access to guest list.
Could know Adrian attended.
Could create report?
She denied.
Her company laptop had been stolen six months earlier.
Police report existed.
So likely not.
But file metadata could be spoofed.
Then a more useful clue:
Fake report contained typo in Hawthorne address.
“Whitmore Avenue” instead of “Whitmore Street.”
Same typo appeared in one old document.
2017 fake settlement.
Someone reused template from Charles investigation.
Who had that file?
Charles.
Eleanor.
Martin Shaw’s investigative firm.
And Bennett Foundation general counsel:
Jonathan Price.
Jonathan had retired two years earlier.
He was at ballroom reception.
Male guest.
Was Eleanor looking at Jonathan, not Adrian?
Lily never identified who Eleanor looked toward.
Ethan assumed Adrian because Adrian disappeared.
Security footage showed both men in same direction.
Important misdirection.
Eleanor watched video.
Her face changed.
“I wasn’t looking at Adrian.”
“Who?”
“Jonathan.”
Why?
Because Jonathan had called her thirty minutes before Lily spoke.
He said:
“Whatever happens tonight, don’t react.”
That was suspicious.
Jonathan was found.
He admitted knowing blackmail existed.
But said he was trying identify sender.
Why not warn Ethan?
Eleanor had asked him privately.
Again Eleanor’s secret network.
Jonathan had traced anonymous envelopes to courier service paid using prepaid card.
Card purchased by woman.
Security footage:
Claire.
Ethan stared at wife.
Claire whispered:
“That isn’t me.”
The woman resembled Claire from behind.
Brown hair.
Same height.
But face hidden.
Then Lily saw still.
“That’s not Mommy.”
“How do you know?”
“Mommy doesn’t have that bracelet.”
The woman wore narrow gold bracelet with green stone.
Eleanor’s face hardened.
She knew it.
“Rachel.”
Claire’s cousin Rachel wore one exactly like it.
May you like
Rachel had denied involvement.
Now evidence pointed directly at her.
