Chapter 2 - Adrian Cole

Security identified Adrian before midnight.
Adrian Cole, thirty-eight.
Real-estate attorney.
Former college boyfriend of Claire Bennett.
They had dated for nearly four years.
The relationship ended eight years before Claire married Ethan.
Nothing criminal.
Nothing secret.
At least publicly.
Ethan wanted Adrian found.
Claire wanted Ethan to hear her first.
They returned to mansion after reception.
Lily slept upstairs.
Claire sat across from Ethan.
“Adrian contacted me four months ago.”
Claire was already pregnant.
He claimed he had received anonymous envelope containing medical report.
Prenatal paternity screening.
Result:
ADRIAN COLE — PATERNITY PROBABILITY 99.98%.
Ethan stared.
“You took a paternity test with your ex?”
“No.”
“Then how does that report exist?”
“I don’t know.”
Adrian didn’t either.
He believed Claire had contacted him indirectly.
Claire told him report was fake.
Then he showed laboratory name.
Hawthorne Reproductive Diagnostics.
Claire recognized it.
It was clinic Ethan and Claire had used two years earlier during fertility treatment.
They had eventually conceived naturally—or so they believed.
Ethan’s anger changed.
“Why was Adrian’s DNA there?”
Claire said:
“That’s what I’ve been trying to find out.”
She met Adrian secretly because she feared report might indicate medical-record error.
Why not tell Ethan?
Because Ethan’s father had died weeks earlier, business restructuring consumed him, and Claire told herself she would verify first.
A familiar mistake:
withholding truth to “protect” someone.
Then Ethan asked:
“Did you sleep with Adrian?”
“No.”
“Since we married?”
“No.”
“Since we met?”
“No.”
“Then the baby cannot biologically be his.”
“I know.”
Unless medical intervention occurred without Claire understanding.
That possibility terrified both.
Ethan asked:
“Did Adrian ever touch you?”
“Only my stomach once. I pushed his hand away.”
“And called the baby his?”
Claire’s eyes lowered.
“Yes.”
She had not told Ethan.
Adrian had become convinced report was real.
His words:
“If this is my baby, you don’t get to erase me.”
Claire ordered him out.
That was the scene Lily witnessed.
But Claire insisted Adrian had visited only three times.
Then who entered repeatedly with key?
Security logs.
Their mansion used coded electronic locks.
Adrian had no registered code.
Yet six entries occurred while Ethan traveled.
All under:
SERVICE ACCESS 04.
Authorized account holder:
Eleanor Bennett.
Ethan stared at mother.
“You gave him access.”
Eleanor’s expression remained hard.
“I was trying to control situation.”
“By letting Claire’s ex into my house?”
“You don’t understand.”
“Then explain.”
Eleanor refused.
Ethan asked:
“Did you send Adrian the paternity report?”
“No.”
“Do you believe the baby is his?”
A pause.
Too long.
“Eleanor.”
She finally answered:
“I believe that report was designed to make him think it was.”
Claire stared.
“You knew it was fake?”
“I suspected.”
“Since when?”
“Before Adrian ever came to your house.”
Claire rose.
“You knew before he contacted me?”
Eleanor looked trapped.
Ethan understood.
“You knew that report existed before Adrian received it.”
Silence.
Then Eleanor said:
“I didn’t create it.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“But you know who did.”
Eleanor looked toward staircase where Lily slept.
“No.”
It sounded false.
Then Claire asked one question.
“Why Adrian?”
May you like
Eleanor’s eyes shifted.
That was the question she feared most.
