Chapter 4 - Before Ethan

Eight years earlier, Claire worked at Bennett Foundation.

That was how she eventually met Ethan.

But before Ethan knew her, Eleanor did.

Claire had applied for foundation legal fellowship while engaged to Adrian.

Eleanor interviewed her.

She liked Claire.

Bright.

Disciplined.

Ambitious.

Then discovered Adrian.

Adrian represented developer fighting Bennett Foundation over community property project.

Eleanor considered conflict.

She told Claire disclose engagement.

Claire did.

Foundation approved safeguards.

Nothing improper.

Then Adrian learned Claire had shared confidential details about his client?

Claire denied.

Their relationship deteriorated.

One night Adrian arrived at foundation gala accusing Claire of choosing Bennetts over him.

Eleanor intervened.

Engagement ended weeks later.

Why did Claire never tell Ethan Eleanor knew Adrian?

Embarrassment.

And because Eleanor later behaved as though it never happened.

Ethan looked at mother.

“You knew my wife’s ex-fiancé before I met her.”

“Yes.”

“And never mentioned it.”

“It wasn’t mine to mention.”

Reasonable superficially.

But then why now facilitate Adrian?

Eleanor said:

“Because whoever sent report threatened expose something else if I didn’t.”

There it was.

Blackmail.

First threat arrived to Eleanor three days before Adrian got paternity report.

A message:

WHEN ADRIAN LEARNS ABOUT THE BABY, YOU WILL HELP HIM SPEAK TO CLAIRE PRIVATELY.

IF ETHAN FINDS OUT TOO SOON, THE 2017 FILE GOES TO BOARD.

What was 2017 file?

Eleanor refused.

Ethan’s voice sharpened.

“This is why you yelled at Lily.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Adrian had been coming because you let him.”

“Yes.”

“You thought Lily was about to expose him in front of everyone.”

“Yes.”

“Why look toward him tonight?”

“Because he told me he wouldn’t attend.”

So Adrian was mysterious guest.

But why was he there?

He said he came after receiving third anonymous message:

TONIGHT ETHAN LEARNS WHO THE FATHER IS.

Adrian feared public humiliation.

He wanted stop sender.

Then he left because Lily’s accusation made him realize he was being staged as visible suspect.

Who staged?

Unknown.

Then Claire asked:

“What’s 2017?”

Eleanor looked at Ethan.

“Year your father changed Bennett Family Trust governance.”

No secret inheritance.

Bennett Hospitality was publicly financed with family voting trust holding minority but influential block.

Ethan’s father, Charles Bennett, created rule:

Eleanor could exercise family proxy only until next-generation governance committee activated.

Activation required Ethan and Claire both serving after specified conditions—not childbirth.

So pregnancy did not magically transfer company.

But 2017 file involved Claire.

Before marriage.

Ethan frowned.

“How?”

Eleanor finally said:

“Your father investigated Claire before you proposed.”

Claire’s face changed.

“You told me he liked me.”

“He did.”

“What did he investigate?”

“Whether Adrian Cole had financial claim against you.”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“I didn’t.”

Eleanor said:

“Charles found something else.”

A sealed settlement.

Claire.

Adrian.

$240,000.

Ethan looked at wife.

“What settlement?”

Claire whispered:

“I never received $240,000.”

Adrian answered:

“Neither did I.”

Yet Bennett file showed payment had been made.

To whom?
