Chapter 5 - The $240,000 Settlement

The 2017 Bennett file did not prove affair.
It proved someone had used Claire and Adrian’s broken engagement as cover for money transfer.
Charles Bennett had hired outside due-diligence firm when Ethan told parents he intended propose.
Intrusive?
Yes.
Ethan was angry learning it.
But file existed.
Investigator discovered 2014 settlement agreement:
Adrian Cole v. Claire Morgan.
Alleged breach of joint-property agreement.
Settlement:
$240,000.
Signed by both.
Claire stared.
“My signature is fake.”
Adrian:
“Mine too.”
Bank destination:
Morgan Advisory Escrow.
Claire had no such company.
Account closed after payment.
Who paid?
Bennett Foundation.
Eleanor went pale.
Ethan saw.
“You authorized this?”
“No.”
Authorization carried Eleanor digital signature.
She insisted forged.
Board archive confirmed original approval metadata came from Charles Bennett’s executive account.
Ethan’s father.
Why would Charles pay fake settlement involving woman his son had not met yet?
Wait.
2014 was before Ethan and Claire met.
Charles couldn’t be protecting son.
Unless date falsified.
Bank transfer actually occurred 2017.
Agreement backdated 2014.
So after Ethan began dating Claire, someone created old-looking settlement to justify payment.
Why?
$240,000 went through Morgan Advisory Escrow.
Then split:
$180,000 to private investigator.
$60,000 to medical consulting company:
Hawthorne Advisory Services.
Same corporate family as fertility clinic.
Now pregnancy mystery connected.
Claire whispered:
“Hawthorne.”
Who received money?
Consulting company director:
Dr. Nathan Mercer.
Reproductive geneticist.
Former medical director Hawthorne Diagnostics.
Was he mysterious man Lily saw?
No.
Lily clearly identified Adrian from photo.
Nathan was separate.
What did Nathan do for $60k?
Invoice:
HEREDITARY RISK CONSULTATION — CONFIDENTIAL FAMILY MATTER.
Whose hereditary risk?
Bennett family.
Charles had undergone genetic testing after heart condition.
Ethan too?
Ethan had never authorized in 2017.
Then audit showed sample labeled:
E.B.
Could be Ethan Bennett.
Could be Eleanor Bennett.
Eleanor finally admitted.
“It was mine.”
She had genetic testing.
Why hide under fake settlement?
She didn’t.
Charles did.
Eleanor had believed testing billed normally.
Charles routed cost through secret account.
Why?
The private investigator portion was real target.
Charles had been investigating someone without board knowing.
Who?
Adrian?
Claire?
Eleanor?
Then investigator records surfaced.
Subject:
NATHAN MERCER.
Not Claire.
Charles suspected Nathan was selling confidential patient information.
He used fake Claire-Adrian settlement to hide investigation from Nathan because Nathan had access to Bennett accounts through medical consulting.
Messy and improper.
But why use Claire’s name?
Because Charles’s investigator, Martin Shaw, selected old public engagement dispute as plausible cover after due diligence discovered it.
Without Claire’s consent.
Another powerful person using her life as paperwork.
Ethan was furious at dead father.
Then private investigator’s surviving assistant provided notes.
Charles suspected Nathan had accessed frozen reproductive samples belonging to several prominent families.
Including Bennett.
Ethan looked up.
“What samples?”
From Hawthorne.
But Ethan had not visited Hawthorne until years later.
Charles’s samples.
Eleanor’s samples.
Possibly others.
Then note:
MERCER CLAIMS “THE BENNETT LINE” CAN BE PROVEN WITH SAMPLE B-17.
Ethan stared.
This was why paternity forgery might exist.
Someone was exploiting old Bennett genetic files.
Then Lily entered doorway.
She had overheard only name.
“Mercer?”
Claire crouched.
“You know that name?”
Lily nodded.
“The man said it.”
“What man?”
“Mr. Adrian.”
“What did he say?”
Lily repeated:
“Mercer says Ethan can never know.”
Adrian had not merely called baby his.

He had been discussing someone named Mercer.
And Claire had not heard that part.
