Chapter 1 - The Man Who Comes When Ethan Is Gone

The ballroom went quiet one table at a time.

Lily stood beside Claire’s chair, small hands clenched against her pale-blue satin dress.

“That baby isn’t Ethan’s.”

Claire’s hand immediately covered her pregnant belly.

Across the table, someone dropped a fork.

Ethan appeared through the cluster of guests.

“Lily, who told you that?”

“The man who comes when you’re gone.”

Ethan’s jaw tightened.

Lily did not retreat.

“I saw him touch her belly.”

“She misunderstood!” Claire snapped.

Lily’s eyes filled.

“He called the baby his.”

Ethan stopped moving.

Then Lily looked past him.

Eleanor was already pushing through the reception crowd.

“Enough! Stop lying!”

Lily studied her.

Something changed in the child’s expression.

“I never said the man was here tonight.”

Eleanor stopped.

Ethan slowly turned.

“So how did you know who I meant?” Lily asked.

For one fatal second Eleanor’s eyes moved toward a male guest behind Ethan.

Ethan caught it.

He turned—

but the man was already walking away.

“Stop!”

Ethan pursued him through the ballroom.

The stranger disappeared through a service corridor before Ethan reached the door.

Security blocked the exits minutes later.

Too late.

Claire remained seated, shaking.

Eleanor whispered:

“You should have kept Lily away from this.”

Ethan heard.

“Away from what?”

Neither answered.

Then Lily tugged his sleeve.

“Daddy?”

Ethan crouched.

“Did the man hurt you?”

“No.”

“Did he hurt Claire?”

Lily shook her head.

“What exactly did you hear?”

The child thought carefully.

“He put his hand here.”

She touched Claire’s belly.

“And said, ‘I finally get to see my baby.’”

Claire closed her eyes.

Ethan looked at her.

“Who was he?”

“I can explain.”

“Name.”

Claire hesitated.

That hesitation hurt more than Lily’s accusation.

“Claire.”

“Adrian Cole.”

Eleanor turned away.

Ethan noticed.

“You know him too.”

Eleanor said nothing.

Claire whispered:

“He’s someone from before we were married.”

Ethan’s face hardened.

“An ex?”

“Yes.”

“And he comes to my house when I’m gone?”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Three times.”

Ethan stepped backward.

Then Lily interrupted.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“He came more.”

“How many?”

Lily held up both hands.

Claire stared at her.

“That’s impossible.”

Lily shook her head.

“I saw him from upstairs.”

Ethan turned toward Claire.

“You said three.”

“Because there were three.”

Lily whispered:

“He has a key.”

Claire’s face changed completely.

Ethan saw it.

“So either you’re lying…”

He looked toward Eleanor.

“…or someone has been letting Adrian Cole into my house without Claire knowing.”

Eleanor’s diamond necklace trembled against her throat.

And Ethan suddenly understood why she had known exactly which man Lily meant.
