Chapter 6 - What Lily Actually Saw
Lily’s account had to be handled carefully.
She was six.
Not investigator.
Adults stopped feeding questions.
A child specialist interviewed her once, neutrally.
Lily described afternoon.
She was upstairs coloring.
Doorbell did not ring.
Adrian entered.
Claire seemed surprised.
They argued.
Lily watched from staircase.
Adrian held paper.
Claire said:
“Get out.”
Adrian:
“Mercer says Ethan can never know.”
Claire:
“I don’t care what Mercer says.”
Then Adrian approached.
He touched Claire’s belly.
Claire slapped his hand away.
Adrian said:
“If report is real, that’s my baby.”
That was exact wording.
Not:
“This is my baby.”
Conditional.
Lily understood differently.
Important.
Then Claire ordered him leave.
Adrian apologized.
He looked frightened.
So Lily’s accusation at ballroom was sincere but incomplete.
She had seen enough to believe baby not Ethan’s.
Then why did she say “the man who comes when you’re gone”?
Because Adrian visited multiple times.
Three confirmed.
Other three SERVICE ACCESS entries?
Security footage recovered.
A different man used Eleanor’s code.
Cap.
Glasses.
Face obscured.
Height matched Nathan Mercer.
Was Mercer entering mansion?
One frame showed hand.
Distinctive square signet ring.
Nathan’s professional photographs showed same ring.
Eleanor denied authorizing him.
How did he obtain code?
Adrian.
Adrian admitted he wrote it on card and kept wallet.
His wallet disappeared briefly at gym.
Could have been copied.
No proof.
Then Claire asked:
“Why would Mercer come here?”
Ethan ordered full home sweep.
Nothing alarming.
But in Ethan’s study, IT specialist found unauthorized device attached behind router.
Passive network sniffer.
Installed approximately four months earlier.
Someone had monitored home traffic.
Not microphone necessarily.
Network metadata.
Potential access to printer queue.
That could expose Claire medical appointments.
Travel schedules.
Adrian messages.
Someone had engineered paranoia.
Then Nathan Mercer was located.
He denied everything.
He had left Hawthorne two years earlier.
He admitted knowing Charles Bennett.
Admitted 2017 investigation.
Denied forging paternity report.
Denied entering mansion.
When shown signet ring image:
“Thousands of rings look like that.”
Then Ethan asked:
“What is B-17?”
Nathan’s confidence changed.
“Where did you hear that?”
“Answer.”
Nathan requested lawyer.
Later through counsel:
B-17 was old Bennett family genetic-reference sample collected from Charles Bennett in 2016.
Why preserved?
Charles had participated in hereditary cardiac study.
Nothing about paternity.
Then why Nathan said “Bennett line”?
Nathan claimed Charles worried heart mutation could pass to Ethan’s future children.
Reasonable.
Then audit checked B-17.
Sample no longer in archive.
Missing.
When?
Removed six months before Claire became pregnant.
Authorized by:
Eleanor Bennett.
Eleanor stared at form.
“I never signed that.”
Signature looked perfect.
But biometric approval log did not.
Someone had forged another Eleanor authorization.
Same pattern as 2017 settlement.
Then Ethan realized:

Whoever was attacking them had been using Eleanor’s name for years.
And Eleanor had made herself easier to frame by keeping secrets.
