Chapter 9 - Room 214 Before the Motel
Briarwood opened in 1996.
Room 214 had apparently become neutral meeting place for family disputes.
In 1998 Elena was twenty-six.
Daniel seven.
Robert James and Robert Hale met Henry Carter there.
Elena attended.
Why?
Her father was ill.
He wanted land issue settled.
Meeting produced agreement.
Henry acknowledged signature on 1991 transfer was genuine.
So no forgery.
But he claimed consent obtained through incomplete disclosure.
Morgan brothers had told him land was worth roughly $900,000.
Months after transfer, rezoning discussions pushed projected value above $3 million.
Did brothers know rezoning was coming?
Robert James said no.
Robert Hale admitted he had heard rumors.
Henry felt cheated.
Not legally straightforward fraud.
But morally ugly.
1998 agreement promised Carter family 20% of future net development proceeds if land ever sold above threshold.
That agreement disappeared.
Until Matthew found copy.
Elena had known.
So why destroy Margaret letter?
Because enforcing all documents would not simply enrich Elena.
It would require reconciling:
Morgan branch rights.
Carter contingent rights.
Worker/community interests.
Development lease.
No single person controlled outcome.
Elena feared years of litigation and dilution of Daniel’s expected family position.
She chose concealment.
Sarah asked:
“Expected by whom?”
Elena looked at Daniel.
“Robert.”
His father had spent years telling Daniel Morgan family land would someday “secure his children.”
But Robert knew restrictions.
He simplified truth into inheritance story.
Maybe because he hoped disputes would settle before Daniel inherited responsibility.
Maybe because admitting history was shameful.
Then Matthew revealed Robert James had changed position shortly before death.
He wanted full independent reconciliation.
That was what brothers agreed May 21, 2017.
Robert planned tell Daniel next morning.
He died before he could.
Robert Hale panicked.
With outstanding charges, he feared appearing would make him suspect.
He fled.
Elena inherited mess.
Instead of telling truth, she buried it.
Then Sarah asked Matthew:
“Why come back now?”
“Because Uncle Bobby disappeared.”
“When?”
“Six weeks ago.”
Robert Hale had been alive until six weeks earlier.
Last known destination:
Briarwood site.
Motel demolished years ago.
Property now self-storage facility.
Matthew found his father’s car there.
Empty.
Inside glovebox:
a bank receipt.
$1,000.
Yesterday’s date.
Elena’s withdrawal.
So Elena had not paid Matthew.
She had paid Robert Hale.
Elena had lied again.
Daniel stood.
“Where is my uncle?”
Elena whispered:
“I don't know.”
“What did he want?”

“He said he finally knew why your father died the morning after Room 214.”
