Chapter 10 - The Cause of Robert’s Death
Daniel demanded homicide investigation reopened.
Evidence did not support murder.
Robert James had advanced coronary disease.
His heart attack was medically unsurprising.
But Robert Hale had discovered something about timing.
Robert took prescription cardiac medication.
Night before death, at motel, he realized refill bottle contained wrong dosage.
Not poison.
A pharmacy dispensing error.
Dose was lower than prescribed.
Could that cause heart attack?
Cardiologist said it might have modestly reduced protection, but could not establish causation.
Robert had severe disease.
He could have suffered event anyway.
Then why secret?
Because pharmacy was owned by Carter Health Group.
A company partly controlled by Elena’s father’s estate.
Elena knew medication error after Robert died.
She received pharmacy incident notice.
She buried it.
Daniel’s voice shook.
“You knew Dad may have received wrong medication?”
“Yes.”
“And said nothing?”
“The doctors told me they couldn't prove it caused death.”
“That wasn't your decision to hide.”
“I know.”
Again.
“I know.”
The phrase no longer helped.
Did Elena intentionally switch medication?
No evidence.
Pharmacy audit showed technician selected wrong strength because packaging nearly identical.
Three other patients affected that month.
Incident later corrected.
No conspiracy.
But Elena concealed report because public connection between Carter pharmacy and Robert’s death could reignite land dispute and expose her family to liability.
Robert Hale learned years later.
He believed Elena might have protected Carter interests at expense of husband.
Hence hostility.
Could Robert’s death be called murder?
No.
Could wrong medication have contributed?
Possibly, not provably.
Could Elena have saved him if she had known beforehand?
No evidence she knew before heart attack.
That distinction mattered.
Sarah refused to let Daniel turn uncertainty into accusation.
Elena’s real wrongdoing was after death.
Concealment.
Then why Robert Hale resurfaced six weeks ago?
He had found pharmacy internal file showing incident notice generated at 7:42 a.m. on May 22.
Robert suffered heart attack at 8:16.
Someone at Morgan house received phone call from pharmacy at 7:51.
Before heart attack.
Who answered?
Landline record could not identify person.
Elena said she was showering.
Robert was in kitchen.
If Robert himself answered, he may have known medication was wrong.
If Elena answered and failed to warn him, implications darker.
Sarah asked:
“Who was in house?”
Elena.
Robert.
Housekeeper Denise Cole.
Denise had died four years earlier.
Or had she?
No fake death.
Confirmed.
But her daughter kept mother’s diaries.
One entry:
MAY 22 — MRS. M. VERY UPSET AFTER PHARMACY CALL. MR. M. SAYS HE ALREADY TOOK IT. THEY ARGUE.
Daniel stared at Elena.
“You answered.”

She began crying.
“Yes.”
