Chapter 4 - The Company His Father Never Mentioned
Morgan Family Custodial Services was not an operating company.
It held assets.
Old land interests.
Insurance proceeds.
Several restricted accounts.
Daniel had inherited none of them.
Robert’s will never mentioned company.
Elena claimed she had never heard of it.
Sarah no longer accepted that automatically.
Neither did Daniel.
Corporate records showed Robert James Morgan created entity in 2003 after mother Margaret died.
Initial ownership:
50% Robert James Morgan.
50% Robert Alan Morgan.
The brothers had apparently reconciled financially despite telling family otherwise.
Why hide it?
The company’s first asset answered partly.
A forty-acre parcel outside Cedar Falls.
Their mother Margaret had inherited land from her parents.
The brothers disputed it.
Robert Alan believed Robert James had pressured Margaret into changing will.
Instead of litigating publicly, brothers placed land in joint custodial company until ownership could be resolved.
Then land became valuable.
A logistics developer leased nearby acreage.
Current estimated value of Morgan parcel:
$11.6 million.
Now Elena’s secrecy had financial context.
But Daniel did not magically own it.
Custodial charter required disputed interests to remain frozen until both family branches were independently verified.
Robert Hale might have descendants.
Daniel might represent father’s branch.
Neither could simply take everything.
Then Sarah found 2018 filing.
Eleven months after Robert James’s death, Robert Hale signed:
CLAIMANT APPEARANCE NOTICE.
He had resurfaced.
Elena met him at motel that same week.
The $1,000 was not payoff for murder.
It was cash.
Why?
Elena finally admitted:
“He called me from bus station. He had nothing.”
“You gave him money?”
“Yes.”
“Why secretly?”
“Because your father made me promise Robert Hale would never contact you.”
Daniel stared.
“Why?”
“He said his brother would destroy family.”
“Financially?”
Elena hesitated.
“Not exactly.”
There it was.
The real secret.
Robert Hale had told Elena something in Room 214.
Something about Daniel’s father.
“What?”
Elena refused again.
Sarah watched her carefully.
“You're not protecting Robert anymore. He’s dead.”
Elena looked at Daniel.
“I’m protecting you.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“My family uses that sentence whenever they're about to lie.”
Then attorney uncovered Room 214 surveillance archive from an unrelated insurance claim.
One still image survived.
Elena entered room at 3:17 p.m.
Robert Hale opened door.
At 4:02, another man arrived.
