Chapter 5 - The Man Who Looked Like Robert
For several hours Daniel believed impossible.
Then facial comparison settled it.
The third man was not Robert James.
He was Robert Hale’s son.
Matthew Hale.
Daniel’s first cousin.
Age thirty-seven.
Daniel had never known he existed.
Again, not a secret twin.
Not a resurrected father.
A concealed branch of family.
Matthew resembled Daniel’s father because Robert Hale and Robert James were brothers.
Why did Elena meet both men?
Robert Hale wanted recognition of his half of custodial company.
Matthew wanted something else.
A document.
Robert James’s original 2003 agreement with Margaret.
Without it, custodial dispute could remain frozen indefinitely.
Robert Hale claimed Robert James had hidden agreement before death.
Elena denied possessing it.
Then Matthew said something surveillance microphone partially captured:
“Tell Daniel who signed hospital form.”
Hospital?
Daniel was twenty-five when father died.
Robert James died after heart attack at Morgan residence.
Daniel had been traveling for work.
Elena was with him.
Hospital records showed Robert arrived alive but unconscious.
He died forty-one minutes later.
What form?
Elena said:
“DNR.”
Daniel stared.
His father had a do-not-resuscitate directive?
Robert had always told Daniel he wanted “every chance.”
Medical chart showed no DNR.
Then where was form?
Elena admitted Robert carried private advance directive.
It limited prolonged mechanical support after catastrophic neurological injury.
It did not prohibit ordinary resuscitation.
So not murder instrument.
But why Matthew care?
Because witness signature was Robert Hale.
Daniel’s supposedly estranged uncle had seen his father days before death.
Brothers were in contact.
Again Elena had lied.
“What were they planning?”
Elena looked exhausted.
“To settle land.”
“Why didn't they?”
“Your father died first.”
Then Matthew accused Elena of destroying original agreement to keep Robert Hale from claiming half.
Did she?
“No.”
Could she prove it?
No.
Then Sarah remembered receipt.
“Why did you tell Daniel not to read date?”
Elena finally answered.
“Because April 17 wasn't date I was afraid of.”
Sarah turned paper under lamp.
Altered digit.
Chemical analysis showed handwritten motel note had been written over an older note.
Conservator recovered original.
ROOM 214 — ROBERT MORGAN.
Underneath:
MAY 21, 2017.
The day before Daniel’s father died.
Elena had used an old receipt as notepaper in 2018.
The dangerous date wasn't withdrawal date.
It was handwritten date underneath.
