Chapter 14 - The Woman Robert Met Before He Died

L.M. was Lorraine Mercer.
Robert James’s former business attorney.
Not lover.
Not secret wife.
Not Daniel’s biological mother.
Lorraine had negotiated Morgan-Carter land issues for years.
She disappeared professionally after 2017 and moved to assisted living following stroke.
Still alive.
Why hide her name?
Because Lorraine drafted 2017 memorandum.
She also held original Margaret documents.
Daniel visited.
Lorraine’s speech was slow but mind clear.
She remembered Robert James arriving May 21.
Robert Hale came later.
Elena came briefly.
The brothers argued.
Then signed.
Lorraine notarized draft.
Why not file it herself?
Robert asked her to wait until he told Daniel personally.
He died next morning.
After funeral, Elena instructed Lorraine not to file.
Lorraine objected.
Elena threatened legal challenge over authority.
Lorraine, already facing health problems, withdrew.
Cowardly.
She admitted it.
Then Lorraine revealed reason date terrified Elena.
Not because it proved Robert survived death.
Because it proved Robert changed estate/governance intentions the night before death.
If Daniel saw May 21, he would ask what father did that night.
That would uncover memorandum Elena suppressed.
The video’s “dead father’s name after death” illusion came from overlapping dates:
2018 bank receipt.
2017 handwritten motel note.
Same paper reused.
Elena knew once Daniel examined date carefully, her nine-year concealment could unravel.
But why did Sarah’s overheard conversation include “everything his father left him becomes a lie”?
Because Elena and Robert Hale were discussing false family narrative:
Daniel believed father left him future control of Morgan land.
Actually Robert removed him before death.
Not because he hated Daniel.
Because he wanted son free from conflict.
The emotional truth hurt differently.
Robert’s final recorded message, found with Lorraine, said:
“Daniel, if this reaches you, I decided not to make you referee of mistakes Bobby and I inherited. Build your own family. Don't spend your life protecting ours.”
Daniel listened twice.
Then cried.
His father had not disinherited him.
He had released him.
Elena had reversed that intention for nine years because she believed family control equaled security.
Sarah sat beside Daniel.
He apologized again for standing silent while Elena attacked her.
Sarah said:
“I need more than apology.”
“I know.”
“I need you to never make me prove I deserve protection while someone humiliates me.”
Daniel nodded.
“You shouldn't have had to ask.”
Their marriage would continue, but trust required action.
Elena faced consequences for assault, false accusation and document concealment.
Sarah did not excuse her because larger mystery existed.
Then Lorraine asked:
“Did Bobby give you second receipt?”
Daniel frowned.
“What second receipt?”
“The one Robert gave him the night before he died.”
Different receipt.
Not Elena’s.
Robert James had withdrawn:
$1,000.
Same amount.
Date:
May 21, 2017.
Recipient note:
MOTEL 214 — L.M.
But Lorraine never received money.
“Then who did?”
She looked confused.
“Robert said it was for the woman waiting upstairs.”
“What woman?”
Lorraine whispered:
“I never saw her face.”
Daniel looked at Elena.

For once, Elena seemed genuinely unaware.
And that meant one final piece of current mystery remained.
