Chapter 6 - The Last Night

Briarwood records confirmed Room 214 was occupied May 21, 2017.

Guest name:

Robert Morgan.

Which Robert?

No ID copy survived.

But two men had apparently met.

A motel housekeeper remembered brothers because they argued loudly.

She was now seventy-one.

Her memory was imperfect but specific.

One man said:

“You don't get to put Daniel’s name on it.”

Other answered:

“He's only safeguard.”

Safeguard for what?

Custodial company.

Original charter emerged from state microfilm.

If one brother died before land dispute settled, his interest did not automatically pass to spouse or child.

Instead independent custodian held it.

Daniel was listed as emergency family representative.

Not beneficiary.

That distinction mattered.

His father was not secretly leaving him $11.6 million.

He was assigning responsibility if negotiations failed.

Robert Hale opposed it because he feared Daniel would favor father’s branch.

Robert James insisted Daniel was more trustworthy than professional trustees tied to developers.

The brothers fought.

Then reconciled enough to sign provisional memorandum.

Next day Robert James suffered heart attack.

Was timing suspicious?

Yes.

Did Robert Hale cause it?

Autopsy said severe coronary artery disease.

No poison.

No trauma.

Nothing suggesting homicide.

Sarah refused easy murder conclusion.

Elena, however, had hidden motel meeting because she feared exactly that suspicion.

Robert Hale vanished after funeral.

Why?

He had outstanding tax and fraud charges unrelated to Robert’s death.

He fled prosecution.

That made him look guilty.

But no evidence tied him to death.

Then Daniel learned father had called Elena from motel at 11:42 p.m.

Voicemail archived in old cloud backup.

“Elena, Bobby and I finally agreed. I’ll explain tomorrow. Don't let Daniel sign anything until Margaret’s letter is found.”

Margaret’s letter.

Grandmother dead fourteen years.

What letter?

Elena claimed ignorance.

Sarah noticed her hand tighten.

“You know.”

“No.”

“You always touch your ring when you lie.”

Elena removed hand.

Daniel looked at mother.

“Where is letter?”

Elena whispered:

“I burned it.”

Silence.

May you like

“Why?”

“Because it said your father wasn't supposed to inherit the land.”
