Chapter 1 - The Wrong Receipt

Sarah Morgan had learned long ago that Elena could turn a room against someone before they understood they were being accused.

But she had never expected her mother-in-law to do it like this.

Sarah was mopping the kitchen floor while Daniel’s relatives talked in the adjoining living room. The tiles were still slick with soapy water when Elena suddenly crossed the room, seized Sarah by the hair and yanked her backward.

The mop struck the floor.

“Stop!”

Sarah dropped hard to her knees. Elena dragged her several feet toward the living room before finally releasing her.

Sarah looked toward her husband.

“Daniel… help me?”

Daniel stood beside the sofa.

Silent.

That hurt more than Sarah wanted to admit.

Elena straightened her expensive navy dress and produced a folded bank receipt.

“She stole my thousand dollars!”

Murmurs moved through the room.

Sarah stared at the receipt.

Yesterday she had overheard Elena whispering on the phone behind the pantry door.

No names.

Only fragments.

“He can never know I paid you.”

A pause.

Then:

“If Daniel finds out what happened at the motel, everything his father left him becomes a lie.”

Sarah had not confronted her.

Now Elena was attacking first.

“Here.” Elena shoved receipt toward her. “Deny this.”

Sarah looked at transaction.

$1,000 cash withdrawal.

But something about paper was wrong.

Not amount.

Not bank.

Sarah slowly stood.

“You showed them the wrong receipt.”

Elena’s confidence vanished.

Daniel finally moved.

Sarah took paper and turned it over.

Elena lunged.

Daniel caught his mother’s wrist.

“What’s on the back?”

Sarah stared.

A motel room number.

Beneath it was a man’s name.

ROBERT MORGAN.

Daniel’s father.

Dead for nine years.

Daniel went completely still.

Sarah whispered:

“I heard you yesterday…”

Elena turned white.

“Daniel, don’t read the date—”

His eyes dropped.

Before Sarah could stop him, Daniel read it.

April 17.

Eight years ago.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“My father died nine years ago.”

Elena said nothing.

“This receipt says you met Robert Morgan almost eleven months after we buried him.”

Elena’s lips trembled.

Then Daniel noticed something even stranger.

The year had been written over.

May you like

Someone had changed one digit.

And beneath the altered ink was another date entirely.
