Chapter 3 - The Other Robert Morgan

Daniel’s father was Robert James Morgan.

The motel guest had presented identification for:

Robert Alan Morgan.

Same surname.

Different middle name.

Same birth year.

Not same man.

The mystery seemed to collapse.

Then Daniel asked obvious question.

“Who is Robert Alan Morgan?”

Elena sat down.

“Your father’s younger brother.”

Daniel stared.

“My father didn't have a brother.”

“He did.”

“Why have I never heard of him?”

“Because Robert Alan stopped being a Morgan before you were born.”

The brothers were born thirteen months apart.

Robert James became Daniel’s father.

Robert Alan was volatile as a young man, fought constantly with their father and left home at twenty-one.

After a family legal dispute, he began using stepfather’s surname:

Robert Hale.

Daniel knew that name.

“Robert Hale?”

Sarah recognized it too.

A framed photograph in Daniel’s childhood home had once shown his father beside a man labeled Bobby Hale.

Elena had always called him “an old family friend.”

He was Daniel’s uncle.

Was he alive?

Elena didn't know.

Last confirmed contact:

Room 214.

So receipt did not prove Daniel’s dead father survived.

But Elena’s panic remained unexplained.

Why would existence of an estranged uncle threaten “everything his father left him”?

And why alter receipt?

Elena admitted she wrote Robert Morgan on back deliberately instead of Robert Hale.

“Why?”

“Because that was name he demanded I use.”

The thousand dollars?

She gave it to Robert Hale.

Not stolen by Sarah.

The accusation was fabricated.

Daniel looked at his mother with open disgust.

“You knew Sarah didn't take it.”

“Yes.”

“And you humiliated her anyway.”

“I panicked.”

“That isn't a defense.”

“No.”

Elena finally stopped trying to make it one.

Daniel told Sarah:

“I should have stepped in immediately.”

Sarah looked at him.

“Yes. You should have.”

No instant forgiveness.

Daniel’s silence had been a choice too.

Then they found Robert Hale’s old motel registration card.

Emergency contact:

MARGARET MORGAN.

Daniel frowned.

His grandmother Margaret had died in 2003.

But beside name was phone number.

Sarah searched it.

The number had remained active until 2021.

Registered not to Margaret.

To a company:

MORGAN FAMILY CUSTODIAL SERVICES.

Created three weeks after Margaret’s death.

Director:

Robert James Morgan.

Daniel’s father.

The company still existed.

And someone had filed documents under it only four months ago.
