Chapter 7 - Margaret’s Real Decision
Elena had not burned whole letter.
Only original.
She photographed it first.
That single act prevented another family myth from replacing evidence.
Margaret wrote that neither son should own disputed land outright.
She wanted land proceeds divided among three purposes:
40% family branches after verification.
35% former farm workers and tenant families with documented historical claims.
25% community land fund.
Robert James and Robert Hale were custodians, not unrestricted heirs.
Their feud had centered on administration, not simple ownership.
Why did Elena burn letter?
Because after Robert died, a developer offered $7.8 million to buy parcel.
Elena feared worker/community restrictions would reduce family payout and complicate estate.
She destroyed original hoping old corporate charter would govern instead.
That was serious misconduct.
Not murder.
Not poison.
But greed.
Daniel looked at her as if seeing stranger.
“You accused Sarah of stealing one thousand dollars while you destroyed a document affecting millions.”
Elena had no answer.
Sarah’s accusation suddenly revealed its real purpose.
Elena feared receipt would lead to motel.
Motel would lead to Robert Hale.
Robert Hale would lead to Margaret’s letter.
So she discredited Sarah before Sarah could reveal overheard conversation.
She had attacked first.
Exactly as Sarah suspected.
Yet central mystery still remained.
Why was Elena speaking yesterday to unknown man?
Robert Hale?
Possibly.
They traced call.
Prepaid number.
Tower location forty miles away.
Then voicemail arrived on Daniel’s phone.
Older male voice:
“Ask Elena why she paid me again.”
Again?
The receipt showed $1,000 in 2018.
Had Elena recently paid same person?
Bank records:
$1,000 cash withdrawal yesterday morning.
So Elena had reused old receipt while accusing Sarah.
That explained why Sarah said wrong receipt.
There were two withdrawals of exactly $1,000.
Eight years apart.
Yesterday’s cash was gone.
Who received it?
Elena broke.
“Matthew.”
Daniel’s cousin.
Matthew Hale had returned.
Why?
“He found Margaret’s original letter.”
Impossible.
Elena burned it.
Matthew claimed Margaret made two originals.
One for each son.
Robert Hale kept his.
Where?
Matthew wanted $1,000 for travel and storage expenses before meeting Daniel.
Elena paid him not to meet Daniel.
Sarah stared.
“So the conversation I heard…”
“Was Matthew.”
“What did he mean by everything Robert left Daniel becoming a lie?”
Elena answered:
“Because Daniel’s father didn't leave him what he thinks.”
Daniel frowned.
“My inheritance?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
