Chapter 9 - The Staged Call
Margaret resurfaced at attorney’s office.
With Sophie.
Voluntarily.
David arrived furious.
“Enough.”
Margaret did not argue.
She explained live wedding call was staged.
Why?
She wanted Stephen Ward to believe she remained hidden and vulnerable.
Wedding provided public event where her sudden appearance would force whoever monitored Claire to react.
Claire became unwitting bait.
David nearly walked out.
“You used Claire.”
“Yes.”
“You used Lily.”
“Yes.”
“You ruined my wedding.”
Margaret looked at him.
“I thought Stephen was preparing to move the Continuity Reserve before audit.”
“Then call police.”
“I didn’t trust foundation counsel.”
“You had outside counsel.”
“I didn’t know who was compromised.”
Again fear becoming control.
But was Stephen actually culprit?
Evidence:
He had approved surveillance vendor.
He managed Continuity Reserve.
He disappeared.
Strong.
Then Stephen contacted FBI voluntarily through attorney.
He had not fled.
He entered protective interview after receiving threats.
He accused Robert Hale.
Why?
Robert chaired board and wanted old claimant files destroyed after statutory settlements.
Stephen claimed he was preserving evidence.
Spyware was actually Robert-directed monitoring?
Robert denied.
Forensics showed authorization chain:
Robert requested wedding security.
Stephen approved vendor.
Vendor subcontractor inserted spyware after separate request.
Separate request account:
M.PIERCE.
Mara Pierce.
Missing whistleblower.
Why would Mara spy on Claire?
Mara surfaced too.
Alive.
She had been working with Margaret.
She inserted tracking because she believed Claire was leak.
So Margaret’s own investigation compromised Claire.
Not Stephen.
Again suspicion moved.
What did Mara know?
Anna’s second ledger showed Continuity Reserve had another function.
Protecting witnesses, yes.
But one group of relocation payments involved women connected to maternity disputes.
One name:
Ellen Mercer.
The woman buried as Margaret.
David went cold.
Ellen Mercer had received foundation payments before death.
She was not random hospital stranger.
That changed everything.
Why was Ellen in same hospital as Margaret?
Why did her body end up under Margaret identity?
