Chapter 1 - The Call Claire Tried to Stop

The wedding had cost more than most people’s houses.
Crystal chandeliers glowed over a ballroom filled with white roses, champagne towers, and formally dressed guests. Beyond the dance floor stood an ornately carved doorway leading to the private bridal rooms.
Claire Whitmore had spent the morning making sure every detail looked perfect.
Then she saw the phone in Lily’s hands.
“Give it to me!”
Seven-year-old Lily backed away.
She was crying.
Claire grabbed for the device.
Lily tightened both hands around it.
“No!”
Claire’s composure vanished.
“Lily, give me the phone!”
The child refused.
Claire struck her.
Lily screamed and slid across the polished floor toward the wedding guests.
The room erupted in gasps.
David had just entered through the carved doorway.
He saw Lily crying on the floor.
Then Claire.
He crossed the room with fury written across his face.
Within seconds the wedding table was overturned, plates breaking around Claire as David pulled himself back before the confrontation went any further.
Then he went straight to Lily.
He crouched.
“What happened?”
Lily clutched the black phone against her chest.
“She said Grandma has passed away.”
David’s anger changed.
“What?”
Lily swallowed.
“Claire said Grandma died.”
David looked toward his bride.
Claire’s face tightened.
Then Lily handed him the phone.
An older woman filled the screen.
Snow-white hair.
Thin face.
Gray-blue eyes.
David stopped breathing.
His mother.
Margaret Hale.
A woman whose funeral he had attended eleven months ago.
Claire looked at the screen.
Her reaction was not shock.
It was recognition.
The woman blinked.
Moved closer to camera.
Not a recording.
A live call.
“David?”
His hand began trembling.
“Mom?”
Margaret looked past him, as if trying to see the ballroom.
Then she whispered:
“Claire knows where I am.”
David slowly turned toward his bride.
Claire stepped backward.
The wedding guests fell silent.
David’s voice dropped.
“Where is my mother?”
Claire stared at Margaret on the screen.
Then at Lily.

And whispered something that frightened him more than denial.
“She wasn’t supposed to call today.”
