Chapter 3 - The Wrong Woman
The body buried as Margaret Hale was exhumed.
DNA results came quickly.
Not Margaret.
The deceased woman was Ellen Mercer, seventy-two.
She had died in the same hospital on the same night after complications from a different fall.
Administrative review revealed an identity chain error.
Two elderly women.
Adjacent emergency rooms.
Similar age.
One transfer label printed incorrectly.
At first the disaster looked accidental.
Then investigators found a second label had been manually overwritten.
Someone had reinforced the mistake.
Why?
Claire insisted she had no involvement.
She had arrived after Margaret was already listed deceased.
David searched hospital footage.
Claire appeared in corridor at 2:14 a.m.
Margaret’s official time of death:
1:47 a.m.
So Claire could not have initiated earlier misidentification.
But she did enter records room fifteen minutes after arriving.
Why?
Claire admitted.
“Your mother had called me.”
David froze.
“When?”
“About twenty minutes before the hospital called you.”
Margaret’s voice message:
Claire, if they tell David I’m dead, do not let him see me yet.
David listened twice.
“Why would Mom say that?”
Claire said Margaret had discovered something before fall.
Something involving Hale Family Foundation.
She feared someone would try to “finish what they started.”
Was the fall accidental?
Police had concluded yes.
Now reopened.
Claire said Margaret asked her to retrieve an envelope from hospital belongings.
She went into records area because a nurse directed her there.
Envelope was gone.
Then Claire learned body identification seemed wrong.
“Why didn't you stop funeral?”
“I didn't know for certain.”
“You had Mom’s voicemail.”
“I thought she might have been confused from injury.”
“Four months ago you found out she was alive.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“A letter.”
From Margaret.
Postmarked Maine.
She said:
I survived.
Do not tell David.
They are still watching him.
David shook head.
“And you obeyed?”
“At first.”
“Why?”
“Because she sent proof someone had access to Lily.”
That changed room.
“What proof?”
A photograph.
Lily leaving school.
Taken from across street.
Date:
three days after Margaret’s funeral.
Written beneath it:
IF DAVID KNOWS, LILY BECOMES NEXT LEVER.
David’s expression hardened.
Someone had threatened his daughter.
Claire had kept Margaret’s survival secret because Margaret believed disclosure endangered Lily.
Understandable.
Still a choice.
Then investigator entered.
Ellen Mercer’s family had no connection to Hales.
But she had carried one item not returned to relatives.
A silver pendant.
Margaret’s.
