Chapter 12 - Mara’s Role
Mara had been at hospital.
She lied for years.
Why?
Margaret had summoned her after fall? No, Margaret unconscious.
Ellen called Mara before stroke, said Margaret injured and pendant/memory card at risk.
Mara rushed to hospital.
Using Carol Reynolds’s old badge—given to whistleblower network years earlier—she entered records area trying to secure Ellen’s file.
She did not alter patient IDs.
But when she saw Margaret incorrectly listed dead, she did not correct it.
Why?
Same logic as Margaret later.
She believed accidental death status could protect Margaret if she survived.
Mara became complicit before knowing Margaret would recover.
That was reckless.
Then Margaret woke and agreed.
So “Claire knows where I am” at wedding was true but incomplete.
Claire had helped Margaret relocate later.
Mara and Sophie knew other safe locations.
Robert knew one.
Stephen knew older routes.
No single Claire-controlled disappearance.
Then David asked why Claire attacked Lily over device.
Claire finally gave full explanation.
Twenty minutes before ceremony she received anonymous message:
IF LILY ANSWERS MARGARET, THEY WILL TRACE HER.
Claire believed live call could expose Margaret’s location.
She saw Lily on device.
She tried to take it.
Lily refused.
Claire panicked.
She struck her.
That was still assault.
Protective intent did not excuse it.
Claire looked at Lily.
“I hurt you because I was afraid.”
Lily hid partly behind David.
Claire continued:
“That was wrong. You didn't make me do it.”
David appreciated no excuse.
Wedding was over.
Whether relationship survived would be later.
Then anonymous warning sender identified.
Mara.
She had sent Claire message because she feared trace.
So Claire’s panic stemmed from Mara.
But Margaret intentionally initiated live call anyway.
Why?
She wanted David to know truth.
Why now?
Because wedding day triggered transfer of David’s voting rights in Hale Foundation marital trust.
Claire would become co-trustee after marriage.
If she married without knowing Continuity Reserve liabilities, she could be legally entangled.
Margaret wanted wedding stopped until disclosure.
Claire had known some of this?
Yes.
Four months ago Margaret told her.
Claire planned tell David after honeymoon?
Why delay?
“She asked me not to.”
David laughed bitterly.
“So everyone decided when I was allowed to know.”
Exactly.
Then wedding attorney found something worse.
Claire becoming co-trustee would not merely expose her.
A hidden amendment made her responsible for certifying old Continuity Reserve records.
Who inserted amendment?
