Margaret’s next video call arrived through police-monitored device.
David asked directly:
“Who are you hiding from?”
“I don’t know their name.”
“What do you know?”
“They belong to something Anna found.”
Anna’s memory card.
Hale Family Foundation managed scholarships, housing funds, and medical grants.
Anna, before death, served on audit committee.
She discovered payments to a private facility called Silver Pines Recovery Center.

$6.8 million over eleven years.
At first she suspected fraud.
Actually most payments covered legitimate elder and trauma care.
But several recipients did not exist under listed names.
Alias patients.
One alias:
M. Hale.
Margaret.
Payments started two years before supposed death.
Why had foundation been paying for Margaret’s care before accident?
Margaret said she had quietly attended Silver Pines for treatment after severe anxiety.
No scandal.
She paid personally, but foundation billing department mistakenly processed some expenses.
Anna noticed.
During review she discovered Silver Pines also sheltered whistleblowers under aliases.
That was interesting.
One patient:
Mara Pierce.
So Mara had not vanished randomly.
She entered protected care after discovering foundation irregularities.
What irregularities?
A side fund called Continuity Reserve.
Value:
$18 million.
Restricted to legal settlements and emergency protection.
Not inheritance.
Not secret cash pile.
But money had funded relocation of people connected to Hale disputes.
Who authorized?
Margaret.
David was shocked.
His mother had secretly used family reserve to move people.
Why?
“Because some of them were being threatened.”
“By who?”
“People who wanted old land claims buried.”
There.
Old Hale properties had contamination disputes decades earlier.
Foundation quietly compensated families.
Some board members wanted closure.
Some claimants wanted records preserved.
Margaret helped whistleblowers disappear temporarily.
So when she later needed hiding, she used same network.
Claire became involved only after network was compromised.
Then David asked:
“Who knew Mom’s location?”
Silver Pines administrator.
Foundation counsel.
Mara Pierce.
Claire.
And David’s uncle, Robert Hale.
Robert was chairman of foundation.
He looked suspicious.
But Margaret said:
“Robert helped me.”
So not immediate villain.
Then police traced threatening calls to prepaid phone purchased near Claire’s bridal salon.
Security footage showed buyer.
A woman.
Snow-white hair.
David stared.
