Chapter 10 - Ellen Mercer

Ellen Mercer had been a former nurse at Silver Pines.

She left after discovering confidential patients were being cross-referenced with Hale Foundation legal claims.

Margaret wanted testimony.

They arranged meeting at hospital cafeteria because Margaret was visiting a friend.

Before meeting, Margaret fell down exterior stairs.

Accident?

Camera showed wet stone.

No one near her.

Still likely accident.

She was admitted.

Ellen, separately, suffered stroke in hospital parking area an hour later.

Two women landed in emergency department same night.

Coincidence—but connected coincidence.

Ellen carried Margaret’s pendant because Margaret had given it to her minutes before fall.

Why?

Pendant contained memory card from Anna.

Margaret asked Ellen to take it to Mara if anything happened.

Ellen put pendant around neck for safekeeping.

Then Ellen died.

That explained jewelry on wrong body without someone planting it.

Huge apparent crime collapsed into tragic chain.

So wrong-body burial might truly have begun as administrative error.

Who reinforced label?

Hospital review found staff member manually corrected based on necklace identification and Claire’s confirmation.

Claire had seen pendant and assumed body Margaret.

Her statement reinforced error.

Not intentional deception.

Then Margaret woke.

Laura? Different story, don't reuse too much. A nurse realized living patient was marked dead after ID confusion.

Margaret learned Ellen had died and been identified as her.

She made terrible choice:

she allowed mistake to stand.

Why?

Because Ellen’s death meant Anna’s memory card was likely gone with body, and Margaret feared Stephen/Robert would realize she still lived and hunt remaining ledger.

Again not physical murder conspiracy.

A voluntary disappearance built on accidental hospital error.

Claire did not know.

Four months ago Margaret contacted Claire because she needed help after safe network compromised.

Why Claire?

Outside foundation.

Also because Claire had found Anna’s old second copy of memory card while packing Lily’s things.

Claire had never told David.

Why?

She didn’t know what it was until Margaret explained.

Then Claire helped move Margaret.

So what was Claire trying to grab from Lily at wedding?

Not merely phone.

Lily’s device contained a photograph Margaret had sent minutes before ceremony.

Claire recognized it.

What photograph?

Anna standing beside Stephen Ward.

On back:

THE PERSON WHO KNOWS WHERE ELLEN’S FILE WENT.

Claire feared Lily was holding evidence connected to dangerous adults.

She panicked.

Still no excuse for striking Lily.

But not because she wanted Margaret silenced.

Then David asked:

“Where is Ellen’s file?”

May you like

Mara answered:

“In Margaret’s grave.”
