Chapter 14 - What Anna Found About David

At nineteen David had interned for Hale Foundation.

One summer.

He barely remembered.

Anna’s memory card showed his login used to approve three Continuity Reserve transfers.

David denied.

Dates included week he was hospitalized after appendectomy.

So credentials misused.

Who had access?

Robert.

Stephen.

IT administrator.

Margaret.

Anna initially believed David knowingly participated.

That was why she kept investigation from him.

Later she discovered timestamps proving impossible.

Someone used David as signature shield.

Who?

Old IT audit identified:

Robert Hale.

David’s uncle.

Robert admitted.

He had used David’s trainee credentials because board approval was delayed and families needed relocation immediately.

He considered it administrative shortcut.

Legally improper.

Then once payments became controversial, he never corrected record.

So Anna’s initial suspicion of David was wrong.

Margaret hid partly because she feared David might be implicated until evidence resolved.

Claire knew this four months ago.

Again she withheld.

David stared at her.

“You thought I might have signed those?”

“For about a week.”

“And then?”

“I learned you couldn't have.”

“You still said nothing.”

“Yes.”

Trust fractured.

Then Margaret revealed why she contacted Lily specifically.

Anna left message for daughter before death.

A scheduled archive at age seven.

Lily had just turned seven.

Message:

If Grandma Margaret ever tells you adults are hiding something, make them show Dad.

Anna anticipated family secrecy.

Not exact fake-death scenario.

But she knew pattern.

Margaret followed daughter’s instruction literally.

Too literally.

She used Lily to force David’s attention.

David said:

“Anna wanted Lily protected from secrets. Not turned into messenger.”

Margaret cried.

“I know.”

Then Claire asked:

“Who was mysterious woman in live call?”

Margaret herself, clearly.

So by Chapter 15 need full payoff.

Before that, investigator found location metadata from wedding call.

Not Silver Pines.

Not Sophie office.

A small coastal house.

Owned by:

Claire Reynolds Trust.

David turned.

“Claire owns safe house?”

Claire looked stunned.

“I don’t.”

Trust had been created six months earlier.

Beneficiary:

Claire.

Settlor:

Margaret Hale.

Margaret admitted.

She placed house under Claire’s name without telling her to keep it outside Hale assets.

So Claire legally “knew where Margaret was” only because she had helped once and property was in her name, but did not know exact current room? Yet Margaret said Claire knows where I am. Better Claire did know the house, but believed Margaret had moved. Live call from same house reveals she was back there.

Why return?

Margaret wanted wedding confrontation.

She positioned herself there deliberately.

Then David asked mother:

“Why choose Claire as legal owner?”

Margaret answered:

“Because Anna told me Claire would eventually be the only person in this family with no financial reason to keep me dead.”

Claire had never met Anna? Timeline: Claire entered David’s life two years after Anna died, so Anna couldn't know Claire. Contradiction. Instead Margaret chose Claire because she was outside Hale system, not Anna instruction.

Correct.

“Because she was outside Hale system.”

Good.

Then title of property file:

MERIDIAN HOUSE.

Mara went pale.

“What?”

Meridian had been name of maternity clinic Ellen worked at decades earlier.

Safe house was built on same property.

Coincidence?

May you like

Margaret said she didn’t know.

That became new arc seed, but don't reveal until after current mystery solved.
