Chapter 9 - The Package
Robert Carter mailed K-1 anonymously.
He had found key among Julia’s sealed effects after estate storage review.
He recognized Rebecca’s name.
He suspected Claire, Rebecca’s half-sister, might understand.
Instead of telling Ethan directly, he sent Claire.
Why?
Cowardice dressed as caution.
He feared Ethan would learn Robert had known about Elizabeth pregnancy.
He hoped Claire would investigate and reveal without exposing him.
Claire opened K-1.
Found Julia/Elizabeth records.
Confronted Robert.
He admitted.
Then both agreed:
Find Mia first.
Then tell Ethan.
Reasonable sounding.
Wrong in practice.
They found Mia four months ago.
Still didn't tell.
Why?
Mia’s guardianship records complicated.
Elizabeth wanted be present.
Rebecca demanded Bellweather evidence first.
Robert wanted attorneys.
Claire feared marriage.
Everyone had condition.
Truth waited.
Then Claire planned today.
Mia would arrive with Susan.
Claire would tell Ethan privately after reception.
Robert would join.
Rebecca learned plan and decided it was another managed performance.
So she brought Nora too.
Did Rebecca intend hallway shock?
Yes.
She wanted destroy possibility of partial disclosure.
She dressed Mia and Nora to match Lily because Claire had sent photo of Lily’s outfit when coordinating Mia meeting.
That was manipulative and inappropriate.
Rebecca admitted.
Then why did Claire mistreat Lily immediately before?
Lily found K-1 in Claire’s desk drawer after Claire took it out preparing confession.
She asked what it was.
Claire grabbed.
Lily resisted.
A glass tipped.
Food spilled.
Claire, already panicked, ordered her to clean.
When Lily crawled after key, Claire stepped on her hand.
A vicious act.
Not planned.
Not justified.
Then Ethan arrived.
Claire attacked him because he picked up K-2, which fell from her pocket during struggle.
She feared he would open truth in front of guests before she could explain.
Again control.
Then Ethan said:
“You keep calling it timing.”
Claire whispered:
“I know.”
“It was lying.”
“Yes.”
“And what you did to Lily?”
Claire could barely answer.
“Abuse.”
Important she names.
Ethan separated from her immediately.
No instant forgiveness.
Then child services assessed household.
Ethan cooperated.
Lily remained with him with additional support because he intervened and Claire removed; fictional process.
Mia and Nora remained with established caregivers while parentage/legal arrangements reviewed.
No one simply “gave” children to Ethan because DNA.
Then sisters began meeting in supervised child-friendly setting.
They looked similar.
But personalities distinct.
Lily bold after safety restored.
Mia cautious.
Nora laughed at everything.
Ethan stopped comparing.
Then Robert apologized.
“I thought protecting you meant bringing complete answer.”
Ethan said:
“You taught me people should trust me only after you've edited truth.”
Robert absorbed.
Then K-1/K-2/K-3 contents fully cataloged.
But one discrepancy remained.
Bellweather created only three embryos.
All accounted:
Lily.
Mia.
Nora.
No fourth.
Good.
Then Dana found notation on K-3:
FOLLOW-UP GROUP C / CARTER MATCH — 4 SAMPLES.
Four samples?
Not four children necessarily.
Could be control sample.
Ethan asked.
Dr. Keene said:
“Fourth was maternal control.”
Julia’s sample?
No.
Code:
J.C.-M.
Julia Carter maternal.
So no fourth child.
Resolved.
Then why red and blue lights on Claire face in video? Police arrived maybe lights through windows; not mystery.
Then Ethan looked at one photo from Bellweather.
Three infant wristbands.
LILY CARTER.
BABY WARD.
BABY GRANT.
All dated within eleven months, not same age exactly. Prompt says same age look. They could be 3, close enough. Yet "look to be same age". Fine.
But DNA showed full sisters.
Then Julia's letter had one final line:
Rebecca knows why I chose the name Lily.
Ethan frowned.
He thought he knew.
Julia loved lilies.
Rebecca said:
“No.”
The name came from a woman at Bellweather.
A woman who had warned Julia never to trust Keene.
Her name was Lily Morgan.
Who was she?
Not current mystery maybe tie to clinic. Could be another twist.
Rebecca said:
“She disappeared from Bellweather before your first transfer.”
This could lead central conspiracy deeper. But user wants full central secret only Ch15. We can develop and resolve by Ch15, then new mystery distinct.
