Chapter 12 - Julia’s Last Decision

Julia did learn about Nora.
Five months into Melissa’s pregnancy.
Keene confessed partially after Julia threatened independent audit.
He told her embryo C had been transferred “by mistake.”
Julia was furious.
She demanded Ethan be told.
Then why didn't she?
Keene said Melissa had been told embryo came from anonymous donor and had begun bonding with pregnancy.
Julia feared sudden legal fight would destabilize everyone.
Still, Ethan had right.
She planned disclose after birth with attorney.
Then her cancer worsened.
She was hospitalized.
Her final months became fragmented.
Rebecca found draft letter:
THERE MAY BE ANOTHER BABY.
Never sent.
Why?
Julia collapsed before completing.
Rebecca found after Julia death.
So Rebecca knew possible third child much earlier?
Yes.
That contradicts her earlier claim she learned later. She knew possibility, not confirmation.
She hid draft because she feared Ethan would pursue unverified claim and Bellweather would destroy records.
Again secrecy.
Then Ethan confronted.
“You knew.”
“I knew Julia suspected.”
“You told Claire K-3 didn't exist.”
“I didn't know where Nora was.”
“That wasn't my question.”
Rebecca admitted.
She lied.
Why?
She wanted locate Nora first.
Same disease as Robert:
complete answer before truth.
Then Melissa confirmed she met Julia once.
Julia came without Ethan.
She cried.
She told Melissa:
“You didn't steal anything from me.”
Melissa did not understand.
Julia did not reveal genetic origin because lawyers advised.
But she asked:
“If there is ever a problem, protect the baby before protecting clinic.”
That line stayed.
Then Julia died.
Melissa learned full truth after Nora birth.
She demanded contact with Ethan.
Bellweather counsel claimed Ethan had waived rights? Forged/invalid paperwork.
Melissa distrusted.
She sought own lawyer.
Court created temporary confidential guardianship while records reviewed.
But due Rebecca's hidden documents and clinic misinformation, Ethan was never notified.
Could court proceed without genetic father? It might if records showed donor/waiver. Fictionally plausible but don't over-detail.
Then Melissa eventually learned Ethan had not consented.
Why still not contact?
Fear.
She loved Nora.
She feared losing.
Human.
She said:
“I told myself I was protecting her. I was protecting myself too.”
Ethan understood pattern too well.
Then Lily, Mia, Nora’s current arrangements remained.
No one forced immediate sibling household.
Weekly playdates.
Ethan attended.
Robert sometimes.
Claire excluded unless approved.
Rebecca not allowed stage surprises.
Then Ethan apologized to daughters for adults’ chaos even though not his fault? Could say “I’m sorry adults made this confusing.”
Lily asked:
“Three sisters?”
“Yes.”
“Me Lily?”
“Yes.”
“Mia Mia?”
“Yes.”
“Nora Nora?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
Mystery simple for child.
Then Ethan realized final answer did not depend on deciding “real Lily.”
All three were real people with names and histories.
Only one was Lily because that was her identity, not because key/appearance.
Then Dana closed child identity inquiry.
Criminal investigation continued for Claire's assault and historical clinic fraud.
No need exact outcomes yet.
Then K-3 had one last document:
A photograph of Julia and Melissa outside Bellweather.
On back Julia wrote:
IF I DON'T MAKE IT, DO NOT LET THEM TURN THESE GIRLS INTO A CASE NUMBER.
That became guiding principle.
Then Ethan asked:
“Why did Julia arrange Mia in first place if she knew secrecy wrong?”
Cancer panic.
No deeper scheme.
That central emotional truth hurt but made sense.
Then Claire requested Ethan read statement.
He did.
“I knew about Mia for four months. I planned tell you today. I did not know Nora existed. I hurt Lily because she touched the key and I panicked. There is no version where that is her fault.”
Ethan folded statement.
For first time, Claire told complete truth without asking to control reaction.
But marriage might still end.
Then Dana received Bellweather archive inventory.
One sealed box was missing.
Not K-4.
Not another embryo.
Label:
CARTER BIOMEDICAL — PROJECT MIRROR.
Ethan’s stomach tightened.
Could this be new mystery? But must finish current at Ch15 then separate. Project Mirror could sound cloning—avoid. Better hold new mystery until Ch15 and make unrelated to embryos.
So archive missing box should be resolved current: Project Mirror was software audit test, not human. Fine.
Project Mirror:
duplicate-record detection system Robert funded.
It identified duplicated signatures that would have caught embryo C fraud.
Board canceled.
No sinister.
Resolved.
Then why named Mirror? duplicate records.
Good.
One final question remained:
Who dressed Mia/Nora identically?
Rebecca.
Why put key in Nora hand?
Rebecca.
Why make hallway reveal?
Rebecca.
She wanted force truth.
Her method frightened children.

She accepted responsibility.
Everything nearly assembled.
