Greene signed compliance verification without checking source.

Later she discovered Ethan’s signature duplicated from unrelated storage form.
She confronted Keene.
He threatened clinic collapse?
Not physically.
He said disclosure would trigger immediate shutdown affecting hundreds of active patients and stored embryos.
Greene chose internal remediation.
She ordered audit.
But board counsel suppressed report.
She resigned.
Why no regulator?
She believed board filed self-report.
They didn't.
She had no proof until years later.
Again institutional failure.
Then did Keene deliberately choose Melissa?
No.
Embryo C had been mis-coded as donor embryo for Melissa's planned gestational arrangement for another couple whose cycle was canceled.
Transfer occurred due coding error plus false paperwork.
Keene discovered same day.
Instead of disclosure, he concealed.
So Nora was not created as experiment.
Not targeted.
No eugenics.
No sinister cloning.
A catastrophic consent error hidden by professionals.
Then why all three underwent same biopsy?
Keene instituted follow-up screening because he feared embryos might share contamination from storage incident.
There was no contamination.
Screening unnecessary but medically low-risk.
Parents/carriers were told routine dermatology screening, not true reason.
Thus identical scar.
Another concealment.
Then Ethan asked:
“Was Lily ever switched?”
No.
Hospital birth DNA archive confirmed Lily born to Julia.
Mia born to Elizabeth.
Nora born to Melissa.
No baby swaps.
No identity replacement.
Then why did Ethan sometimes notice Lily changing preferences?
Normal toddler development.
His current fear made ordinary memories suspicious.
Important.
He had not unknowingly rotated children.
The child living with him had always been Lily.
This prevented convoluted swap.
Then the key objects.
K-1 = Julia/Lily + embryo origin.
K-2 = Elizabeth/Mia transfer and temporary guardianship.
K-3 = Melissa/Nora unauthorized transfer and Bellweather concealment.
They did not identify girls physically.
They identified archives.
Claire’s statement:
“You were only supposed to find one.”
She meant one additional daughter, Mia, because she did not know Rebecca would reveal Nora same day.
Then why Claire terrified when Nora raised K-3?
Because Claire understood there was another archive Rebecca had hidden from her.
She realized her “complete” truth wasn't complete.
Then Ethan asked:
“Did Claire know Nora existed before hallway?”
No.
Messages, storage access, testimony confirmed.
So Claire did not create three-girl mystery.
But her abuse of Lily remains.
Then Rebecca apologized to Claire too.
“I set you up.”
Claire replied:
“You brought truth. I hurt Lily.”
No blame-shifting.
Then Robert asked Margaret Greene:
“Why didn't you contact me? I commissioned audit.”
Greene answered:
“Because board told me you had sold interest and signed confidentiality release.”
Robert had not.
Signature forged?
No.
His investment exit agreement contained broad confidentiality clause he did sign, but board misrepresented as gag on compliance communication.
Legal ambiguity exploited.
Then current Bellweather successor agreed independent restitution process for affected families.
No giant windfall specified.
Children privacy protected.
Then Ethan received one unexpected letter.
From Dr. Keene.
Not apology alone.
It said:
There is one thing you still have wrong. Julia knew about the coding error before Nora was born.
Ethan stared.
Rebecca said impossible.
Keene attached appointment log.
Julia met him privately five months into Melissa’s pregnancy.
