Chapter 7 - Julia’s Letter

Julia knew about two.

Not three.

That distinction mattered.

Her letter began:

Ethan,

If Lily and the child Elizabeth carried are ever together, then Rebecca kept promise longer than I deserved.

The phrase “all three” had been written on outer envelope by Rebecca later.

Not Julia.

No impossible foresight.

Julia confessed.

She had authorized Elizabeth transfer without Ethan.

Why?

Cancer fear.

Control.

Love mixed with desperation.

She wrote:

I told myself I was giving you another chance to be a father if I died. Truth is, I was deciding your future without you.

Ethan cried.

Then:

If both girls survive, tell them neither was backup.

That line broke him.

Mia had never been replacement.

Julia wanted her known eventually.

Why did she not tell before death?

Her health deteriorated faster than expected.

She asked Rebecca to arrange disclosure after treatment stabilized.

Then she died from complications of cancer.

No suspicious death.

Rebecca panicked.

Then Bellweather’s illegal third transfer emerged.

Everything became tangled.

Julia letter also said:

There should still be one embryo frozen. If Bellweather tells you otherwise, demand original chain-of-custody.

Ethan looked up.

Third embryo.

Julia believed still frozen.

Therefore Nora’s existence proved fraud.

Then Dr. Samuel Keene became central.

He was alive.

Retired in Florida.

When contacted through counsel, he initially denied.

Records contradicted.

Eventually he admitted embryo C transfer.

Why?

Bellweather was facing financial collapse after equipment failure damaged multiple embryos.

Keene feared lawsuits.

Ethan/Julia embryo C had been mistakenly moved into transfer inventory under another couple's code.

Melissa Grant, nurse, discovered discrepancy after implantation.

Keene chose conceal rather than report.

He altered records to make embryo appear intentionally assigned.

Melissa believed paperwork.

Once pregnancy established, reversing impossible.

He convinced her disclosure could cause custody chaos.

She carried Nora.

After birth, Melissa demanded truth be documented.

Bellweather settlement created protected trust for Nora’s care while legal status unresolved.

Why no contact Ethan?

Keene’s attorneys argued disclosure would expose forged consent and clinic.

They buried.

Rebecca learned and secretly copied records.

She did not expose because she feared legal chaos.

Again cowardice.

Then Claire learned partial story eleven months ago.

She found K-1.

Why K-1 first?

Julia’s records.

K-2 held Elizabeth/Mia.

K-3 held Nora/Bellweather fraud.

Claire opened first two but never third.

She knew Lily and Mia.

She did not know Nora existed.

That explains final horror.

When second hallway girl appeared, Claire realized Rebecca had brought third child and K-3.

“You were only supposed to find one.”

Meaning:

Claire had planned Ethan to discover one additional daughter—Mia—today.

Not Nora.

She wanted control sequence.

Then Ethan asked:

“Why today?”

Claire had received deadline from Rebecca:

Tell him by 6 p.m. or I will.

Claire planned controlled confession after reception.

But Lily found K-1 key early.

Chaos.

Then Ethan noticed:

If Claire intended confess later, why force Lily cleaning floor and hurt her?

Because she panicked when Lily held key in front of guests.

Her abusive reaction was not part of larger conspiracy.

It was loss of control.

Important.

Then K-3 remained unopened.

It held truth of Nora’s transfer.

But Nora’s small key was in her hand.

Ethan asked:

“Who gave you that?”

Nora pointed toward Rebecca.

Rebecca nodded.

“I thought she should carry the thing adults kept using to define her.”

Ethan said:

“She is three. She shouldn't carry evidence.”

Rebecca looked ashamed.

“You're right.”

He took key only after Nora willingly handed it.

Then they opened K-3.

Inside was not only Bellweather record.

There was a photograph of Dr. Keene standing beside someone Ethan knew.

His own father.

Robert Carter.

And photograph was dated two years before IVF.

Why had Robert Carter known Keene before any embryos existed?
