Chapter 8 - Robert Carter’s Connection
Robert Carter was not involved in illegal embryo transfer.
That possibility frightened Ethan first.
Records quickly showed different relationship.
Robert had been one of Bellweather’s early investors through Carter Biomedical Fund.
A minority stake.
He sold it years before Ethan and Julia became patients.
Ethan never knew.
Why hide?
Robert disliked mixing family and investment.

Robert and Keene at fertility research fundraiser.

Robert died? He can be alive maybe. Prompt doesn't mention. Let's make Robert died natural heart attack a year before current, but avoid another dead. Could be alive in assisted? Better alive and can answer.
Robert arrived next day.
Ethan confronted.
“You knew clinic had problems.”
“Yes.”
“And said nothing.”
“I believed fixed.”
“You believed man whose board ignored your audit?”
Robert looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
Did Robert know about Elizabeth pregnancy?
He learned near Julia’s death.
Julia told him.
He promised keep until she disclosed.
She died.
Why still not tell Ethan?
Because Elizabeth begged wait while legal guardianship arranged.
Then Rebecca vanished.
Robert tried find.
He did not know Mia whereabouts.

Need resolve: Mia and Nora had been told “Lily game” by Rebecca? Hmm.
Could say Rebecca instructed them only: “If anyone asks who you're here to see, say Lily.” At three, they misunderstood “what is your name?” and repeated. This is plausible but weak.
Better K-2 records show Mia was temporarily called Lily in guardianship because Rebecca used alias Lillian Ward to protect from clinic? Nora also given alias Lily Grant? Too coincidental.
Let's fix with child development: initial questioning in chaotic room, they echoed. Later with calm interview they gave Mia/Nora. Not identity programming. Fine.
Then identical scar?
All three underwent Bellweather follow-up biopsy, including Lily through Julia, Mia through Elizabeth, Nora through Melissa. Clinic tracked outcomes.
This was unauthorized or incompletely consented.
Then Ethan asked:
“Why identical dresses?”
Rebecca admitted staging.
Wrong.
Then Claire's role:
She had discovered Mia and planned reveal.
Why did she conceal Nora? She didn't know.
Why attack Lily? panic/control.
Could she remain part family? TBD.
Then one key question:
Why was Claire carrying K-2 key in her hand during struggle?
She had taken it from Mia moments before Mia entered hallway? Wait key falls from Claire. K-2. She had planned meet Mia, got key from Rebecca? Rebecca gave Claire K-2 four months ago. She kept.
K-1 drawer.
K-3 Nora.
Good.
Then Ethan asked Claire:
“Why did you say I was only supposed to find one?”
Claire answered:
“One sister. Mia. I had no idea Nora existed.”
Truth.
Dana verified messages between Claire and Rebecca.
Claire had repeatedly asked:
“Is there another child?”
Rebecca refused until full disclosure.
Why?
She wanted Claire tell Ethan first.
Manipulative.
Then Dana found something else:
Rebecca had not been the person who sent K-1 to Claire.
Package handwriting wasn't hers.
Who sent it?
Robert.
Ethan’s father.
Robert had triggered entire discovery eleven months earlier.
