Police opened K-1 under warrant.
Inside was not money.
Not adoption paperwork.
Not a secret will.
A medical folder.
Embryology records.
Three embryo numbers:
BC-441A.
BC-441B.
BC-441C.
Parents:
Ethan Carter.
Julia Carter.
All three marked:
TRANSFERRED.
On different dates.
Ethan stared.
“That’s impossible.”
Julia had only one documented transfer.
Lily.
The second occurred six weeks later.
The third nine weeks after that.
A woman cannot undergo three pregnancies overlapping like that.
So the other embryos had been transferred to other women.
Without Ethan’s knowledge.
Possibly without Julia’s.
That was criminal territory.
Then another sheet.
GESTATIONAL CARRIERS:
A — JULIA CARTER.
B — ELIZABETH WARD.
C — REDACTED.
Ethan knew Elizabeth.
Julia’s cousin.
She had died? Avoid death proliferation. She was alive, living Arizona.
Nora contacted.
Elizabeth cried before question finished.
“Yes.”
She had carried one of Ethan and Julia’s embryos.
Why?
Julia asked her.
Ethan went silent.
“My wife did this?”
Elizabeth explained.
Julia learned she had aggressive ovarian cancer shortly after embryo transfer.
She feared pregnancy might not continue.
Doctors believed Lily pregnancy could proceed with monitoring, but Julia panicked.
She wanted backup chance for Ethan to have child if she lost pregnancy or died.
She asked Elizabeth to carry second embryo.
Ethan was never told.
Why?
Julia believed he would refuse because Elizabeth was recovering financially and relationship complicated.
That was unethical secrecy.
Elizabeth agreed anyway.
She gave birth to a girl:
Mia.
Where was Mia?
Elizabeth raised her for eighteen months.
Then Julia died.
A woman from Bellweather arrived with legal documents claiming embryo transfer had been invalid and Ethan intended custody review.
Elizabeth panicked.
She left state.
Months later Mia disappeared from daycare pickup.
Kidnapped?
No.
Elizabeth’s own mother picked Mia up at Claire’s request? Let's keep layered but logical.
Elizabeth said:
“I gave her to Rebecca.”
Voluntarily?
“Yes.”
Rebecca told her Ethan had discovered everything and needed time.
Elizabeth signed temporary guardianship.
Then Rebecca vanished with Mia.
Elizabeth believed Ethan had child.
Ethan believed only Lily existed.
Two adults each thought child was with other side.
Claire knew?
She found Rebecca’s files years later.
Then why not tell Ethan immediately?
Because Claire had a personal connection.
Rebecca was her estranged half-sister.
And Rebecca had left Claire a letter:
IF ETHAN FINDS OUT BEFORE I FIND CHILD C, ALL THREE GIRLS MAY DISAPPEAR.
Who was Child C?
Third daughter.
And who carried her?
K-1 records redacted.
K-2 might tell.
Then Ethan asked the three girls:
“Which one is Mia?”
One hallway girl raised hand.
The other girl whispered:
“I’m Nora.”
Detective Nora looked startled.
The child continued:
“Rebecca calls me Nora.”
So third daughter had been named after someone coincidentally? Better avoid detective same name. Rename detective Dana Hayes. Retroactive earlier mentions should be Dana. Assume story now Dana. Fine.
Child C called Nora.
Then the kitchen girl said:
“I’m Lily.”
Three names.
Lily.
Mia.
Nora.
For first time, identities began separating.
But Ethan still had one terrifying question.
