Chapter 4 - The Embrace on the Lawn

Emma’s heart hammered against her ribs as she sprinted across the grass, her long chestnut waves flying wild behind her. Her face was pale with frantic motherly panic as she dropped down to her knees beside her two children at the edge of the curb.
"My babies! Are you hurt?" Emma cried, her voice choked with emotion.

Her manicured hands moved with frantic precision, checking Lily’s arms, legs, and forehead for any signs of injury before wrapping both of her children into a fiercely tight embrace. She pulled them against her ivory blouse, her tears falling onto Noah’s dark hair. Noah buried his face against her shoulder, his small body shaking uncontrollably with heavy, hysterical sobs.
"I'm sorry, Mommy. I couldn't stop her!" Noah choked out, his small hand still clutching Lily’s tiny fingers as he wept.
