Chapter 1 - The Rolling Shadow on Quiet Asphalt

The afternoon sun cast long, golden beams across the green front lawn of the peaceful American suburban neighborhood. The air was warm, filled with the gentle rustle of leaves and the distant, pleasant hum of quiet life. One-year-old Lily crawled across the manicured grass, her tiny knees moving quickly as her enormous sparkling blue eyes remained fixed on a bright-red rubber ball bouncing just a few feet ahead of her. She wore a plush pale-gray elephant romper, the soft hood featuring floppy felt ears and a tiny trunk that bobbed with every eager movement. Giggling softly, her rosy cheeks flushed with pure childhood joy, she reached out her small hands for the toy as it trickled off the edge of the lawn and began rolling across the curb onto the black asphalt road.

Unaware of any danger in her innocent world, Lily followed the ball straight onto the street. But far down the quiet road, the peace was shattered by the roar of a high-performance engine. A bright-red Lotus supercar surged around the bend, its sleek, polished chassis gleaming aggressively under the sunlight. The vehicle gathered speed down the straightaway, its powerful engine growling as its bright headlights flashed in a sudden, sharp warning. The horn blared, echoing harshly against the silent suburban houses, but the sound meant nothing to the baby girl reaching for her rolling red ball in the middle of the oncoming lane.
