Chapter 7 - The Women Who Carried the Lockets
Rebecca and Evelyn both wore lockets.
So Rose purchased pair for them.
Why?
Rose explained by phone.
After C-17 records were altered, the three women feared documents could disappear.
They created physical mnemonic.
Two lockets.
Two engraved names.
One pointed to person responsible for false identity.
Other to person holding original evidence.
No digital trail.
No explanatory letter.
Only they understood.
Why use jewelry?
Because hospital searched files, lockers and desks after breach.
Personal jewelry unlikely seized.
Then why give one to Rebecca?
Because Rebecca discovered alteration.
Evelyn held other because she participated.
Was Evelyn villain?
Not necessarily.
She claimed she altered record under Miriam Cole’s order to protect mother from violent family member.
Rose believed Evelyn.
Rebecca didn't.
Thus conflict.
Then Claire revealed her mother’s dying confession.
Evelyn said:
“I changed a name because I thought I was saving a woman.”
Claire never understood.
Then:
“I learned later I may have saved wrong person.”
Who?
No answer.
Claire had spent years afraid Rebecca would expose Evelyn as criminal.
When Rebecca contacted her, she expected blackmail.
Instead Rebecca wanted help.
They began quietly investigating together.
That changed everything.
Claire and Rebecca were not enemies.
For a time, allies.
Daniel asked:
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Rebecca made me promise.”
“Why?”
“Because she stopped trusting you.”
That hurt.
“Why?”
Claire produced email.
Rebecca to Claire:
Daniel loves his father. If Thomas Mercer is involved, Daniel will confront him before we understand what happened. That could destroy evidence.
Again Daniel’s impulsiveness.
He hated how consistently people predicted it.
Then Claire said:
“I didn't know what was in Emma’s locket. Rebecca never told me which one she kept.”
“Why panic at wedding?”
“Because if Emma had it, Rebecca’s investigation wasn't dead.”
Claire feared past.
Not necessarily guilt.
Then Daniel asked:
“Why did you try removing Emma?”
Claire looked ashamed.
“She said she had proof I killed her mother.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Before walking into wedding, Emma confronted Claire privately.
“You made Mom crash.”
Where did Emma get that?
A note in sewing box.
Not Rebecca’s handwriting.
Someone had added it recently:
CLAIRE KNOWS WHY REBECCA DIED.
Emma interpreted literally.
Claire panicked.
She tried removing children before public accusation.
Cruel.
Wrong.
But different from murder.
Then handwriting analysis.
Not Margaret.
Not Rebecca.
Not Claire.
Who planted note after Margaret died?
Access to sewing box:
Estate executor.
Housekeeper.
Daniel’s father Thomas visited Margaret two weeks earlier.
And Emma.
Then Daniel confronted Thomas.
He denied note.
Security camera at Margaret’s building showed another visitor.
Catherine Cole.
Dr. Miriam Cole’s daughter.
The woman who told Daniel to burn locket.
Why was she there?
Catherine finally agreed to meet.
She admitted planting note.
“Why?”
“To stop wedding.”
“Why?”
“Because Claire marrying you brings two families together that spent twelve years keeping C-17 apart.”
Daniel stared.
“C-17 is alive.”
“Yes.”
“Who is she?”
Catherine looked at locket.
“You've already met her.”
Daniel’s mind raced.
Emma?
Too young.
Claire?
Too old.
Lily?
Too young.
Then Catherine said:
“C-17 isn't the baby.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
She shook her head.
“That's the lie everyone keeps making.”
C-17 was not a child identifier.
It was a mother identifier.
