DNA would solve Claire’s parentage.
Claire refused initially.
Not because she feared truth.
Because she was angry that everyone assumed genetics had to define Evelyn.
“She raised me.”
Daniel agreed.
“That doesn't change.”
Eventually Claire chose testing for herself.
Not to satisfy Daniel.
She compared against Nora.

Why Nora’s strange statement?
She clarified.
Evelyn raised Claire because Claire’s father refused involvement.

Then why did Evelyn make Claire promise never enter Mercer family?
Because Samuel’s family rejected Evelyn.
Thomas’s father paid Evelyn to disappear from Samuel’s life.
Not Thomas.

Thomas admitted.
“I thought I was helping a woman escape.”
He was.
But again without Daniel’s consent.
Then Daniel asked:
“Who told you to do it?”
Thomas answered:
“Evelyn.”
Claire stared.
Her mother orchestrated privacy.
Then Thomas added:
“She gave me one locket.”
Which?
He wouldn't say.
He passed it to Rebecca years later when she investigated.
So Emma’s locket came from Thomas through Rebecca.
Second locket remained with Margaret after Rose.
Now provenance nearly complete.
But engravings still unread.
Then Daniel discovered wedding photographer had captured moment Emma opened locket.
High-resolution image.
Her thumb covered most inscription.
But one letter visible.
M.
Daniel stared.
Miriam?
Michael?
Mercer?
Then Claire whispered:
“That's not the locket I saw my mother wearing.”
“How do you know?”
“Her engraving started with R.”
Two lockets.
M.
