Chapter 3 - The Letter C

Claire returned the next morning.

Not to mansion.

To Phoebe’s office.

With attorney.

Daniel agreed to meeting.

No children present.

He placed photograph on table.

“Who is she?”

Claire stared.

“I don't know.”

“Then why did you recognize locket?”

“My mother had one like it.”

Daniel went still.

“Your mother?”

Claire’s mother, Evelyn Bennett, died when Claire was nineteen.

Claire claimed Evelyn owned identical gold locket.

Same oval shape.

Same floral edge.

Family heirloom.

“Where is it?”

“Gone.”

“When?”

Claire hesitated.

“The year she died.”

Daniel asked about St. Matthew’s.

Claire’s composure cracked.

She had been born there.

Thirty-two years ago.

Irrelevant date.

Then why fear photograph from twelve years ago?

Because Evelyn worked there too.

Maternity ward records clerk.

Same department as Rebecca years later.

Now connection existed.

Claire said Rebecca contacted her shortly before death.

Daniel stood.

“You knew my wife?”

“Barely.”

“How barely?”

“Two meetings.”

“About what?”

“My mother.”

Rebecca believed Evelyn had participated in altering maternity records.

Claire rejected accusation.

Then Rebecca showed her evidence.

A handwritten transfer ledger.

Evelyn’s initials appeared beside three newborn files.

Claire never saw full names.

Only codes.

One code:

C-17.

Daniel looked toward bracelet.

C.

Was it Claire?

No.

Timeline wrong.

Claire was twenty at time.

Could C stand for Carter? Cole? Child?

Then Claire admitted why she feared locket.

Rebecca had shown her sketch of it.

She said:

“If this ever appears, somebody finally opened the wrong box.”

“What box?”

Claire didn't know.

Daniel didn't believe her.

Then Claire asked:

“Where did Emma find it?”

Daniel refused.

Good.

Trust had changed.

Claire looked wounded.

Then angry.

“You think I would hurt your daughters?”

Daniel remembered wedding.

“You tried dragging Emma out.”

“I panicked.”

“Why?”

Claire whispered:

“Because Rebecca told me if that locket appeared, my family would be destroyed.”

There.

Not Daniel’s.

Claire’s.

Then Phoebe entered with forensic photograph analysis.

The picture had been altered.

Not digitally.

Physically.

The woman’s face was not merely torn.

Another photograph had been layered over original years ago.

Daniel’s image was authentic.

Baby authentic.

Woman beside him?

Inserted.

“The photograph lies.”

Rebecca’s note.

They carefully separated layers.

Under false image was original woman.

Still partially obscured by chemical damage.

Blonde hair.

Hospital ID badge.

Only first three letters visible:

EVE—

Claire stopped breathing.

“Mom.”

Evelyn.

Daniel looked at her.

“You said you didn't know woman.”

“I didn't.”

But she recognized enough now.

Then forensic technician found writing beneath photograph backing.

A date.

And initials:

D.M. / E.B. / R.H.

Daniel Mercer.

Evelyn Bennett.

Who was R.H.?

Claire whispered:

“Rose Hayes.”

Daniel turned.

“Who?”

Claire looked toward Emma’s empty chair.

“Margaret Hayes had a sister.”

Daniel knew Margaret as Rebecca’s mother.

He had never heard of sister.

“What happened to Rose?”

Claire swallowed.

“She disappeared.”

“When?”

“Twelve years ago.”

Same year.

Same hospital.

Same photograph.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Margaret’s estate executor.

They had found another item in sewing room.

A locked metal box.

On lid:

FOR EMMA ONLY.

Inside was no document.

Only a second locket.

Identical gold.

May you like

And engraved on its back—

was a different name.
