Chapter 14 - The Threat

The threat did not come from Claire.
Not Daniel.
Not Thomas.
Not Andrew Vale.
Andrew was still alive then, but he did not know Nora’s location.
The threat came from Victor Lane.
The investigator.
He had discovered Nora.
He offered:
Pay $500,000 or I sell story.
Extortion.
Who hired him originally?
That had remained unknown.
Victor was tracked down.
Older.
License revoked after unrelated misconduct.
Through attorneys, he admitted.
His original client was Evelyn Bennett.
Claire’s mother.
But Evelyn had died years before Victor approached Claire.
Impossible?
No.
Evelyn established standing instruction with private firm before death:
If Nora ever attempts contact with Mercer family, investigate.
She feared Nora reconnecting with Michael and dragging Grace into Mercer power struggle.
After Evelyn died, trust administrator continued contract automatically.
Victor inherited file.
Then became corrupt.
He saw profitable secret.
He extorted Nora.
Rebecca discovered.
Thomas paid Victor for files and silence.
That payment wasn't simply buying investigation.
It ended extortion.
Rebecca and Thomas protected Nora.
Again Thomas looked less villainous.
Then why did Victor threaten four years ago?
Because Nora planned telling Grace.
He believed revelation would reduce value of secret.
So he demanded money first.
Rebecca intervened.
Shortly after, she died accidentally.
Nora interpreted timing as warning and retreated.
Not murder.
Fear built its own prison.
Then Victor’s files contained copy of covenant.
And photograph of lockets.
But engraving blurred.
He never knew exact wording.
That was why physical objects mattered.
Then Anna agreed Grace should be told truth gradually with therapist.
Not because locket demanded.
Because Grace had asked.
Nora joined remotely.
Michael was informed but did not intrude.
Paternity still unknown.
Grace decided she did not want DNA yet.
Everyone respected.
This was key.
Mystery did not get to consume child.
Then Grace asked about Daniel.
“Why is he in picture?”
Because he held her briefly at hospital.
Nothing more.
She laughed.
“That’s it?”
“Yes.”
Twelve chapters of suspicion collapsed into ordinary moment.
Good misdirection.
Then Grace asked about Claire.
“She’s my biological mom’s sister?”
Technically Claire was Nora’s maternal half-sister.
“Yes.”
“So Aunt Claire?”
If she wanted.
Claire cried hearing later.
Then Grace asked about Emma and Lily.
No blood connection through Daniel, except distant Mercer ancestry complications via Claire if marriage happens.
Not important.
Then Grace said:
“Can I see locket?”
Everyone froze.
It was ultimately her story.
Anna agreed.
Phoebe brought both.
Grace held them.
“Why doesn't anyone just read backs?”
Adults exchanged looks.
Because adults had spent years fearing words.
Grace turned first.
Before she could read aloud, Phoebe asked:
“Would you like privacy?”
Grace considered.
“Yes.”
Excellent.
She read alone with Anna.
Then returned.
She did not tell them.
Daniel almost laughed.
Of course.
“What does it say?”
Grace smiled.
“That's mine.”
And suddenly every adult understood covenant better than any lawyer had.
Her information.
Her choice.
But story still needed Chapter 15 payoff for reader.
Grace agreed to let Phoebe disclose meaning—not private paternity, because inscription did not contain it—after one condition.
Claire and Daniel had to decide whether wedding was about truth or appearances.
Claire said:
“There is no wedding.”
Daniel looked at her.
She continued:
“Not until Emma trusts me again.”
That mattered.
“And not until you decide whether you can trust me.”
Daniel nodded.
Then Claire turned to Emma.
“I was afraid of what locket would expose about my mother and my family.”
Emma listened.
“I took that fear out on you.”
No excuse.
“I am sorry.”
Emma asked:
“Did you hurt my mom?”
“No.”
Truth.
“Did you make her crash?”
“No.”
Truth.
“Did you know her?”
“Yes.”
Truth.
“Did you lie to Dad?”
“Yes.”
Truth.
Emma looked at Daniel.
“Are you still marrying her?”
“Not today.”
“Ever?”
“I don't know.”
Emma accepted.
Then Lily toddled toward Claire.
Claire instinctively reached.
Stopped herself.
Let Daniel decide.
He lifted Lily.
Boundaries.
Then Phoebe placed both lockets on table.
Tomorrow, she said, she would open covenant archive and explain inscriptions fully.
Daniel looked at gold.
Fourteen chapters of fear.
Two tiny objects.
Then Phoebe said:
“One warning.”
“What?”
“When you read them together, you'll understand why Rebecca chose Emma.”
Daniel frowned.
“Chose her for what?”
Phoebe looked toward eight-year-old.
“To carry the first locket.”
“Why Emma?”
May you like
Phoebe answered:
“Because the inscription was never written for adults.”
