Rebecca was not innocent investigator from beginning.
She participated.

She contacted Nora.

Grace’s adoption was stable.

Rebecca began rebuilding confidential truth trail.

Daniel felt grief change shape.
Rebecca remained woman he loved.

Then Rose clarified:

Then why did Rebecca tell Emma locket could stop Daniel marrying Claire?
Because years later she discovered Claire’s connection to Samuel Mercer and feared Claire had inherited incomplete version from Evelyn.
She worried Claire might enter Mercer family without knowing family history.
But why make an eight-year-old responsible?
Rebecca had been dying?
No.
She didn't know she would die.
She gave instruction as contingency after cancer scare that later proved benign.
Then accident occurred.
A precaution became burden on child.
Even Rebecca made questionable choice.
Daniel hated that Emma carried adult secret four years.
He apologized to her.
“You should never have had to stop my wedding.”
Emma asked:
“Was Mom wrong?”
Daniel answered:
“She was trying to protect us.”
“Was she wrong?”
He paused.
“Yes.”
Emma looked relieved.
Children needed adults allowed to be wrong.
Then Daniel asked why Emma smiled strangely at Claire after opening locket.
Emma admitted:
“Mom said if Claire gets scared, it means she remembers.”
She thought she had completed mission.
Not sinister child.
Just following instructions.
Then Claire apologized to Emma for grabbing her.
No excuse.
Emma did not forgive immediately.
Daniel established boundaries.
Wedding remained canceled.
Whether relationship survived would depend truth and Claire’s behavior.
Then Claire finally confessed her biggest lie.
She knew Rebecca altered C-17 index.
Rebecca told her.
Claire had protected Rebecca’s reputation after death.
“Why?”
“Because Emma worships her.”
Daniel looked toward daughter.
“So you lied to protect Emma’s image of her mother.”
“Yes.”
He understood impulse.
Still wrong.
Pattern repeated across generations:
Protect by hiding.
Then Phoebe obtained complete locket imaging.
She read privately.
Her face changed.
Daniel asked:
“Is it Miriam and Rose?”
“Partly.”
“Does it identify Grace’s mother?”
“No.”
“Father?”

“Claire?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
Phoebe looked at him.
“It identifies the agreement.”
“What agreement?”
“The one everyone has been violating for twelve years.”
Daniel stared.
There was a formal pact between women?
Phoebe nodded.
Signed by Miriam, Rose, Evelyn, Nora, Thomas and later Rebecca.
Not about hiding paternity.
About when truth could be disclosed.
C-17 Confidentiality Covenant.
Legally questionable in parts.
Ethically complex.
Core rule:
Grace controls disclosure when old enough.
Everyone else must preserve records but not reveal publicly.
That explained secrecy.
They weren't merely hiding.
They were waiting for child whose identity was at stake.
Grace was now twelve.
Agreement specified age?
Thirteen.
One year away.
Then why wedding triggered?
Because Claire marrying Daniel could accidentally merge families and create discovery before Grace had choice.
Rebecca wanted pause.

They found back page stuck inside sewing-box lining:

Rebecca didn't oppose marriage forever.
She demanded truth first.
Claire had not told Daniel.
So Emma fulfilled instruction correctly, even without full context.
Then Daniel asked Phoebe:
“What exactly is engraved?”
Phoebe refused until Grace’s guardian was consulted.
Because inscription might reference covenant location.
They contacted Anna.
Anna agreed to meeting.
No Grace present initially.
Anna saw lockets and cried.
“Nora said these were destroyed.”
Then Anna said:
“Grace knows she's adopted.”
Good.
“She doesn't know biological mother.”
“Does she want to?”
“She asked last month.”
Timing.
Grace approaching age thirteen.
Anna had been preparing.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“There is one thing none of you know.”
“What?”
“Nora changed her mind.”
“About what?”
“Grace.”
Daniel went still.
“She wanted her back?”
“No.”
Anna shook head.
“She wanted to tell her the truth herself.”
“When?”
“Four years ago.”

“Why didn't she?”
