Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Stopped the Wedding

The wedding stopped because an eight-year-old girl walked through the doors carrying a crying toddler.

Daniel Mercer did not recognize the sound first.

He recognized the voice.

“Dad…”

Every head in the ballroom turned.

Emma stood at the far end of the golden aisle.

Her beige dress was wrinkled. Tears covered her face. Her arms trembled beneath the weight of eighteen-month-old Lily, who clung around her neck and sobbed into her shoulder.

Daniel forgot the guests.

Forgot the minister.

Forgot the woman standing beside him in white.

“Emma?”

Relief flashed across his face.

Then fear.

His daughters were supposed to be with their temporary caregiver until after the ceremony.

Why were they here alone?

Emma took another unsteady step.

“Dad… please don’t marry her.”

The room went silent.

Daniel moved instinctively.

Claire moved faster.

His bride stepped between them.

“You weren't supposed to be here.”

Daniel looked at her.

Not what are you doing here?

Not are you hurt?

You weren't supposed to be here.

Emma recoiled.

Claire marched down the aisle.

“Claire—”

She ignored him and reached for Emma.

The confrontation happened quickly.

Emma dropped to one knee while keeping Lily protected against her chest.

Daniel rushed forward.

“Don't touch my daughters.”

He pulled Claire away and immediately knelt beside Emma.

“Give Lily to me.”

Emma hesitated.

“It's okay.”

She finally let him take the toddler.

Lily buried herself against Daniel.

Emma grabbed his jacket.

“She’s lying to you.”

“About what?”

Claire recovered behind them.

“Daniel, she's eight. She's upset about the wedding.”

Emma looked at Claire.

Something changed.

Fear became decision.

Her hand slipped beneath the neckline of her dress.

Claire saw it.

And went pale.

“Emma.”

Daniel noticed.

Emma pulled out a small antique gold locket.

Claire’s voice dropped.

“Don't.”

That word changed everything.

Daniel took the locket.

It was old.

Scratched.

Heavy.

He had seen it before.

He just couldn't remember where.

Emma opened it.

Inside was a faded photograph.

A younger Daniel.

Maybe twenty-eight.

He was holding a newborn.

Beside him stood a woman.

Only half her face remained visible because the photograph had been torn.

Daniel stopped breathing.

He knew the room.

St. Matthew’s Hospital.

Twelve years earlier.

But Emma was eight.

That made no sense.

“Where did you get this?”

Emma didn't answer.

She turned the locket over.

There was engraving on the back.

Her thumb covered most of it.

Claire stared at it.

Not curiosity.

Terror.

“That inscription…”

Her eyes moved from the locket to Emma.

Then to Lily.

“Who exactly is her mother?”

Daniel looked sharply at Claire.

“What are you talking about?”

Emma began moving her thumb.

“It’s…”

Then the ballroom doors opened again.

A woman in a dark blue suit entered.

She saw the locket.

And stopped.

Daniel recognized her.

Phoebe Grant.

His late wife’s estate attorney.

Phoebe had disappeared from their lives almost five years earlier.

She looked directly at Emma.

“Don't read that name.”

Daniel stood.

“Why?”

Phoebe’s eyes filled with something close to fear.

“Because if Claire hears it before we know who gave Emma that locket…”

May you like

She looked toward the bride.

“…your daughters may not be the only children in this room whose identities have been hidden.”
