Chapter 10 - Claire’s Sister

Claire had an older half-sister.
Nora Bennett.
Fourteen years older.
Evelyn gave birth to Nora at seventeen and raised her as younger sister within extended family to avoid scandal.
Messy family secret.
Nora grew up believing Evelyn was sister until adulthood.
At twenty-eight, Nora became pregnant.
C-17.
Timeline fit.
She was biological mother of Grace.
Michael Mercer had dated her.
Potential father.
Why conceal?
Nora was married to another man.
A controlling, wealthy political consultant named Andrew Vale.
Nora feared divorce and custody consequences.
Miriam arranged privacy.
Evelyn altered record.
Rebecca’s identity used improperly.
Rose objected.
Everything converged.
Then Nora disappeared after delivery.
Not murdered.
She entered private domestic-violence relocation program after leaving Andrew.
Grace was placed temporarily with Anna, Nora’s closest friend.
Then Nora intended reclaiming child after safe relocation.
She never did.
Why?
She changed her mind.
Nora believed Grace would be safer with Anna than dragged through custody battle.
She consented to adoption.
Painful.
Voluntary.
Then where was Nora now?
Alive.
Different name.
Claire knew.
That was her greatest secret.
She had been in occasional contact.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Rebecca told me Nora’s safety mattered more than our relationship.”
Daniel absorbed.
Fair.
Then why wedding panic?
Emma’s locket could expose Nora publicly.
Claire feared Andrew Vale might learn Nora was alive.
But Andrew died three years ago.
Danger gone?
Not entirely.
His estate and adult sons might pursue records for reputational reasons.
But physical threat lower.
Then Michael.
Did Nora tell him baby wasn't his because Andrew was father?
Unknown.
DNA could answer if Grace consented someday.
But central mystery still locket.
What were engraved names?
One identifies creator of lie.
One person supposed to expose it.
Candidates:
Miriam.
Rebecca.
Evelyn.
Rose.
Thomas.
Then Claire finally admitted she had seen one engraving years ago.
Which locket?
Evelyn’s.
What name?
She refused.
Daniel almost laughed.
“We're ten chapters into this nightmare and you're still refusing?”
Claire looked at him.
“Because if I say it without second locket, you'll misunderstand.”
Rebecca’s warning.
Names need context.
Then Nora contacted Claire.
Someone had told her Daniel was investigating.
Who?
Catherine.
Nora agreed to secure video with attorneys.
Daniel saw woman in her forties.
Blonde.
Claire’s eyes.
Nora said:
“Leave Grace alone.”
“I will.”
That surprised her.
“I don't need her DNA. I don't need her story unless she wants it.”
Nora softened.
Then Daniel asked about Michael.
Nora looked away.
“I loved him.”
“Was Grace his?”
“I don't know.”
How could she not know?
Because Andrew and Michael overlapped briefly.
There.
No easy paternity.
Nora chose not to test.
Grace’s legal father was none.
Anna adopted as single mother.
Michael never knew potential.
Daniel asked whether Michael deserved truth.
Nora said:
“Yes.”
So she told him herself.
Michael was devastated.
But he did not demand DNA.
He wrote Grace a letter to be held by Anna until Grace was adult or asked.
Healthy.
Then Nora addressed locket.
“Rebecca misunderstood one thing.”
“What?”
“She thought inscription protected me.”
“It didn't?”
“No.”
“It protected Claire.”
Daniel looked at Claire.
“From what?”
Nora answered:
“From finding out why Evelyn raised her.”
Claire stared.
“What are you talking about?”
Nora went still.
“You don't know?”
Claire shook head.
Nora started crying.
“Claire…”
Then screen disconnected.
Not intentionally.
Nora’s attorney ended call after Nora became overwhelmed.
Claire looked shattered.
“My mother raised me because she was my mother.”
Daniel said nothing.
Then Claire remembered something.
No childhood photographs of Evelyn pregnant with Claire.
She had always assumed privacy.
Birth certificate?
Evelyn Bennett.
Hospital?
St. Matthew’s.
Daniel and Claire looked at each other.
Another altered maternity record?
Claire whispered:
“No.”
Phoebe checked date.
Thirty-two years earlier.
Before C-17 program supposedly existed.
But same physician family.
Same records department.
Then she found notation on Claire’s original file.
A symbol identical to one engraved inside second locket.
Not a name.
A tiny rose.
Rose Hayes.
The mystery had started twenty years before Grace.
And suddenly the question at wedding—
May you like
Who exactly is her mother?—
might never have been about Emma at all.
