Chapter 6 - The Mercer Payment

The payment existed.

$250,000.

From Mercer Foundation.

To St. Matthew’s.

Twelve years earlier.

Daniel’s father, Thomas Mercer, approved it.

Memo:

Maternal Privacy Initiative.

Daniel felt sick.

His family had funded system producing false records.

Phoebe investigated.

The donation was legitimate on surface.

Hospital requested money to improve privacy after celebrity patient leak.

But internal emails showed Thomas wanted one specific incident contained.

C-17.

Why?

Daniel confronted his father.

Thomas Mercer was seventy-one and recovering from surgery.

He did not pretend not to remember.

“C-17 was a scandal.”

“What scandal?”

“A donor’s daughter gave birth privately.”

“Who?”

Thomas refused.

Daniel almost shouted.

Then remembered patterns.

He asked:

“Was the child harmed?”

“No.”

“Was she taken from mother?”

“No.”

“Was any mother forced to surrender her?”

Thomas hesitated.

“No.”

Important.

“Then what did you hide?”

“Identity.”

“Whose?”

Thomas looked at lockets.

“You have those?”

Daniel’s pulse accelerated.

“You recognize them.”

“Yes.”

“Read inscription.”

“No.”

“Why is everyone afraid of two names?”

Thomas replied:

“Because one is false.”

Which?

No answer.

Then he explained payment.

The donor involved was not Mercer.

But Mercer Foundation had partnered with hospital.

Thomas agreed to fund privacy cleanup to avoid scandal hurting program.

He told himself he protected young mother.

In reality, he protected wealthy institutions.

Rebecca later discovered.

She was furious.

Then Daniel asked:

“Did Rebecca have C-17?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

Thomas answered too quickly.

Daniel noticed.

“Dad.”

Thomas closed eyes.

“Because Rebecca was with me that night.”

Daniel stared.

“What?”

Rebecca had discovered record problem during shift.

She called Thomas because Mercer Foundation funded program.

Thomas arrived.

Rebecca spent hours in administrative office.

So she was not delivering baby.

Her name was used falsely.

Good.

One suspect eliminated.

Then Evelyn?

Thomas would not say.

“Was Evelyn mother?”

“I don't know.”

Maybe true.

Then why Rebecca’s name?

Someone needed alias.

Rebecca’s employee profile was used.

Unauthorized.

Who accessed it?

Miriam Cole.

Claire’s aunt.

Now Miriam looked central.

Then Thomas revealed something else.

He saw newborn C-17.

“How?”

Hospital administrator asked him to verify privacy measures.

He entered nursery.

Baby wore pale pink cap.

He remembered because mother had left something beside bassinet.

A gold locket.

Which one?

He couldn't recall.

Inside was photograph.

Not Daniel’s later altered photo.

A different picture.

Two women.

One brunette.

One blonde.

Back engraving.

Thomas read it.

“What did it say?”

He looked at Daniel.

“No.”

“Dad.”

“Rebecca made me promise.”

Again.

Daniel slammed palm against table.

Then stopped.

Thomas flinched.

Daniel lowered voice.

“I'm tired of everyone deciding ignorance protects me.”

Thomas looked ashamed.

“That is exactly what Rebecca said.”

Then he handed Daniel old envelope.

Rebecca had written to Thomas one year before death.

If Emma ever finds locket, tell Daniel only this:

Neither name is the mother’s name.

Daniel stared.

So engraving wasn't answer.

It was clue.

Two names.

Neither mother.

Then what?

Thomas continued:

“One name identifies person who created lie.”

“And other?”

Thomas looked toward photograph.

“The person who was supposed to expose it.”

Daniel’s phone buzzed.

Claire.

One photograph.

Her mother Evelyn holding newborn.

Beside Evelyn—

Rebecca.

Same night.

Same clothes.

C-17?

Claire wrote:

I FOUND THIS IN MOM’S STORAGE.

Daniel zoomed.

Around Rebecca’s neck was one of gold lockets.

May you like

Around Evelyn’s neck—

the other.
