But Catherine believed an eighteenth child existed.
Not necessarily another Hale family member.
A claimant omitted from settlement.
Records from 1989 listed eighteen pediatric screenings.
Only seventeen became beneficiaries.

name redacted.
Why excluded?
Arthur personally removed file.
Eleanor knew.
That explained Catherine’s note:
Eleanor was paying for what Arthur did.
Perhaps Arthur suppressed one claimant.
Eleanor privately compensated family afterward.
Investigators traced irregular $410,000 not to Anna alone.
Only $126,000 supported Anna.
Another $284,000 went through shell charity:
North Star Assistance.
Recipient identities sealed.
Court-authorized review revealed one family.
Surname:
Dawson.
Victor knew it.
Catherine’s maiden name was Dawson.
His wife’s family had received secret payments from Eleanor.
Victor stared at mother.
“Why were you paying Catherine’s family?”
Eleanor finally broke.
“Because Catherine was Patient Eighteen.”
Silence.
Catherine grew up near Hale Chemical property.
At age seven she was screened after groundwater complaint.
Her test showed exposure markers similar to other children.
Arthur excluded her claim.
Why?
Because Catherine’s father, Thomas Dawson, worked as Hale Chemical safety manager.
Arthur feared including manager’s child would strengthen allegations company knew contamination extended beyond worker housing.
He pressured Thomas into private settlement.
Thomas accepted.
Catherine never knew.
Years later she married Victor without knowing his father had concealed her childhood claim.
Arthur knew exactly who she was when Victor introduced her.
He said nothing.
Eleanor knew too.
She said nothing.
Catherine discovered truth fourteen years ago.
That was betrayal.
But did it explain disappearance?

Catherine believed Victor knew.

A letter supposedly from Victor.
Investigators found copy.
Victor read:
Catherine,
Dad explained your family’s settlement years ago. I didn't tell you because it was over before we met. Please don't turn this into something bigger.
Victor shook head.
“I never wrote this.”
Handwriting looked like his.
Signature looked like his.
Forgery.
Who forged it?
Daniel?
Eleanor?
Arthur?
Mara?
Then Anna examined paper.
“I've seen this stationery.”
Where?
Arthur’s private study.
Eleanor went pale.
Victor turned.
“Mother?”
