Chapter 11 - Eleanor Saw Her
Six weeks earlier Eleanor met Catherine.
Not by accident.
Catherine contacted her.
She was alive.
She had lived under surname Catherine Dawson for years, mostly in Oregon and Washington.
No fake death certificate.
No staged corpse.
She had simply disappeared voluntarily after emotional collapse and escalating fear around Hale family records.
Why stay away after learning Victor had not forged letter?
This was harder.
And less flattering to Catherine.
Initially she intended return.
Then she discovered her own signature on improper trust transfer could be portrayed as financial misconduct.
Arthur promised protect her.
Eleanor threatened—without legal basis—to expose Catherine as thief if she returned publicly during foundation audit.
Catherine panicked.
She left country briefly.
Months became years.
Then shame took over.
Victor rebuilt life around her absence.
Catherine convinced herself returning would only reopen wounds.
That was not noble.
She abandoned husband without truth.
She admitted this in letter.
“I was afraid first. Then I was ashamed. Eventually I used fear as an excuse not to face what I had done to you.”
Victor read sentence repeatedly.
Was she now back?
Eleanor said yes.
Why?
Arthur had left sealed instruction with Anna.
After certain claimant trust audit conditions were met, Catherine could access Room 17 evidence proving transfer was repaid and she had not stolen money.
Those conditions were finally met this year.
Catherine returned to clear record.
Why not contact Victor directly?
She wanted evidence secured first.
Same family disease:
secrecy disguised as protection.
Victor hated it.
Did Catherine see Lily?
Yes.
Catherine entered mansion two days earlier.
Found Lily wandering upstairs, hungry.
She gave child bread from service pantry.
That explained Lily’s “hungry lady.”
Lily mistook Catherine’s older face for photograph because it actually was same woman.
Catherine told Lily to go downstairs.
Then why didn't Catherine intervene over child’s condition?
She had only brief encounter and did not know full situation.
Still, she left.
Another morally uncomfortable choice.
Where was Catherine now?
Eleanor didn't know.
Then Victor received call.
No caller ID.
Woman’s voice.
Older.
Familiar enough to stop his breath.
“Victor.”
He could not speak.
Catherine continued:
“Daniel didn't lock anyone in Room 17.”
“Where are you?”
“I'll come back when you know why key was with Lily.”
“Catherine—”
Call ended.
Victor looked at Daniel.
If Daniel did not originally put key into Lily’s possession—
who did?
Daniel had admitted giving it back to her after she found it.
But perhaps Lily had not found it in Eleanor’s safe at all.
Victor asked him again.
