Chapter 5 - The Photograph of the Baby

The photograph became first major clue.

Victor and Catherine married seventeen years earlier.

Three years later she disappeared.

No children.

At least that was what Victor believed.

Yet photograph showed Catherine holding newborn.

Forensic dating confirmed image was taken roughly fifteen years ago—one year before disappearance.

Was baby hers?

No proof.

Hospital bracelet visible but unreadable.

Daniel recognized blanket.

Hale Foundation funded St. Matthew’s Women’s Center.

Catherine volunteered there.

She often held infants awaiting foster placement.

So photograph might be innocent.

Then Victor found gold family crest stitched into blanket.

Not hospital issue.

A Hale item.

Eleanor denied knowledge.

Daniel didn't.

“Dad had blankets like that made.”

“For whom?”

Daniel hesitated.

“Foundation children.”

Records showed Arthur created private program called Seventeen Fund.

There was number again.

Purpose:

Emergency support for seventeen children affected by closure of Hale-owned chemical plant decades earlier.

Not secret heirs.

Not hidden Hale babies.

Seventeen claimant families.

Room 17 stored their confidential files.

That explained number partly.

Arthur had created physical archive corresponding to Seventeen Fund.

Why hide it?

The plant closure involved groundwater contamination and worker exposure.

Hale family settled claims privately.

Some recipients requested confidentiality.

Catherine discovered program.

She believed payments were insufficient.

Eleanor managed fund.

So perhaps her file documented administration.

But why terror?

Investigators examined File 17 cabinet.

Empty.

Someone removed contents recently.

Security footage showed Daniel entering Eleanor’s office two nights earlier.

Daniel finally admitted:

“I took it.”

Victor’s fury returned.

“Where?”

Daniel retrieved envelope from car.

He had stolen file after finding gold key because he feared Eleanor would destroy both.

Inside:

payment schedules.

Letters.

Medical reimbursements.

Nothing obviously criminal.

Then one handwritten note from Catherine:

ELEANOR DID NOT CREATE THE SEVENTEEN FUND.

SHE IS PAYING FOR WHAT ARTHUR DID.

Victor read twice.

“What did Dad do?”

Eleanor refused answer.

Then Lily wandered close and pointed at Catherine’s photograph.

“The hungry lady.”

Everyone stopped.

Victor crouched.

“What?”

Lily pointed at Catherine.

“She gave me bread.”

Daniel went white.

Victor’s heartbeat changed.

“When?”

May you like

Lily pointed upstairs.

“Up there.”
