The Golden Key to Room 17 / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7 - Catherine’s Envelope

Anna Hale—born Anna Mercer before adoption—was found at nearby hotel.

She came willingly.

She looked nothing like Catherine.

That immediately disproved Lily’s identification.

So Lily had seen another woman.

Anna admitted using Room 17.

Arthur gave her access years ago.

She entered two days earlier through service staircase with Daniel’s knowledge.

Daniel had hidden that.

Again.

Victor confronted brother.

Daniel said Anna contacted him secretly six weeks earlier.

She claimed Catherine left sealed package with her fourteen years ago.

Instruction:

Do not give Victor unless Eleanor opens File 17 or Seventeen Fund becomes subject to investigation.

Anna believed Lily finding key meant old archive had resurfaced.

Why involve Daniel?

She feared Victor would react emotionally before evidence secured.

Daniel agreed.

Poorly.

He helped Anna enter Room 17.

Then why make Lily hide key?

Because Daniel needed Eleanor to believe key still missing while Anna searched archive.

Daniel was deceptive.

But his motive was increasingly different from starvation allegation.

That remained unresolved.

Victor asked:

“Why wasn't Lily being fed?”

Daniel’s expression collapsed.

He denied intentionally starving her.

Lily had severe food restriction imposed by Eleanor as “discipline” after child repeatedly took food from formal trays before guests arrived.

Daniel knew Eleanor had restricted sweets/snacks.

He claimed he did not know staff had interpreted order as no meals outside Eleanor-approved schedule.

Victor checked kitchen logs and staff messages.

Truth was ugly.

Eleanor told staff:

“Do not give Lily anything unless Daniel approves.”

Daniel, overwhelmed by business calls, repeatedly failed to respond.

For nearly two days Lily received only small breakfast and water.

Not calculated starvation plan by Daniel.

But negligent failure.

When Lily asked him for food that morning, Daniel told her:

“Not now. Wait until dinner.”

To a hungry four-year-old, that became:

“He said I wasn't allowed to eat.”

Daniel had failed her.

He admitted it.

Victor removed Lily from Daniel’s immediate care pending child-welfare review and placed her safely with trusted nanny and pediatric evaluation.

No secret absolution.

Then Anna handed Victor Catherine’s envelope.

Inside:

one letter.

Victor,

If you are reading this, Eleanor finally lost control of Room 17.

I did not leave because I stopped loving you.

I left because someone convinced me you already knew what Arthur had done.

Victor’s hands shook.

What had Arthur done?

May you like

Next sentence:

Ask your mother why there were eighteen children, not seventeen.
