Chapter 13 - What Eleanor Did After Catherine Left
Three weeks after Catherine disappeared, Eleanor received call from her.
Catherine said she was safe.
She said Victor was innocent.
She asked Eleanor to tell him.
Eleanor promised.
Then did not.
That was the darkest part.
Why?
Eleanor believed Catherine was unstable, unpredictable and dangerous to foundation investigation.
She also believed Victor would abandon business and chase her.
Arthur’s health was failing.
Daniel was not ready.
Victor was holding Hale companies together.
Eleanor chose institution over son.
She told Victor there had been no contact.
For years Victor believed Catherine vanished without explanation.
Eleanor knew she was alive at least three weeks afterward.
Later she received occasional indirect confirmation through Arthur.
Arthur secretly maintained contact with Catherine.
He begged her to return.
She refused.
Arthur preserved Room 17 evidence because he hoped one day Victor would learn.
Why didn't Arthur tell Victor directly?
Catherine made him promise until foundation transfer issue resolved.
Arthur accepted promise he should have broken.
Again everyone chose secrecy.
Then Victor asked:
“Did you know where she lived?”
“Not exactly.”
“Did you send her money?”
“No.”
“Threaten her after first year?”
“No.”
Forensic evidence supported that Eleanor’s direct threats stopped early.
Catherine’s prolonged absence became her own choice.
So Eleanor caused initial rupture and extended it through lie.
Catherine extended it further through fear and shame.
Arthur enabled both through silence.
No single mastermind.
Then Catherine sent Victor location.
Not reunion point.
Old Hale Foundation clinic.
Victor went with investigator.
Catherine was gone.
But left video statement.
Her face finally visible.
Older.
Real.
Alive.
Victor watched without speaking.
She explained Patient Eighteen.
Improper bridge transfer.
Eleanor’s forged letter.
Arthur’s confession.
Her voluntary disappearance.
Her failure to return.
Then:
“Daniel knows some of this because I asked him for help. He should never have involved Lily.”
Victor agreed.
“And Eleanor is not reason I stayed gone fourteen years. She is reason I left that night. I am reason I stayed gone.”
That distinction mattered.
Then Catherine revealed another issue.
Room 17 archive contained seventeen claimant files.
Patient Eighteen was kept separately.
But Arthur had hidden one additional ledger.
Not about contamination.
Not Catherine.
A Hale household ledger.
Catherine found it six weeks earlier.
It showed payments beginning twenty-seven years ago.
Recipient:
ELEANOR H.
Victor almost laughed.
“Mom paying herself?”
No.
Eleanor H. was another person.
Same first name.
Different surname redacted.
Catherine said:
“This is why Eleanor was terrified when she saw the key. She knew Room 17 contained proof she had been paying someone to keep quiet.”
Victor turned toward investigator.
About what?
Video continued.
“Not about me.”

“About Victor.”
