Eleanor admitted payments.
Twenty-seven years earlier, Victor was twenty-eight.
Before Catherine.
Before Seventeen Fund.
Before most current conflicts.
A woman named Eleanor Hart worked as nurse for Hale family.
Same first name as Eleanor Hale.
To avoid confusion staff called her Nell.
Nell left suddenly after an incident at family’s mountain property.
Eleanor Hale paid her annually.
Why?
At first Eleanor said pension.
Records disproved.
Payments were personal.
$24,000 annually initially.
Later $36,000.
Total over decades:
approximately $780,000.
From Eleanor’s private money.
Not foundation.
Not claimant trust.
Not corporate theft.
What did Nell know?
Eleanor refused.
Victor realized this was separate from Room 17’s current mystery.
“Does Catherine know?”
“Only payments.”
“Is this why you feared key?”
“Partly.”
Partly.
The other reason was forged letter and Catherine records.
Eleanor feared opening Room 17 would expose both solved Catherine story and unrelated older secret.
Victor refused let new mystery derail current one.
“First Catherine.”
Investigators reconstructed timeline.
Fourteen years ago:
Catherine learned she was Patient Eighteen.
Confronted Eleanor.
Eleanor forged Victor letter.
Catherine left.
Arthur contacted her within days, confessed Victor was innocent.
Catherine remained away while investigating trust and protecting herself from financial accusation.
Improper $1.5M transfer was real but repaid; Catherine had signed based on misleading explanation.
No theft.
No criminal disappearance.
Eleanor later knew Catherine was alive and concealed contact.
Arthur secretly maintained occasional communication.
Mara helped Catherine leave.
Anna eventually held sealed evidence.
Six weeks ago Catherine returned after audit conditions cleared.
She contacted Eleanor.
Then Daniel.
She entered Room 17.
Lily accidentally encountered her.
Catherine gave Lily bread.
Gold key passed accidentally to Lily.
Daniel told Lily hide it because he wanted Catherine’s return secret until evidence secured.
Daniel’s treatment of Lily was negligent and controlling, not part of Catherine conspiracy.
Recorded cries were Catherine’s timer-triggered failsafe to force Victor toward Room 17.
So who was “locked inside”?
Nobody.
The apparent prisoner was recorded voice from historical claimant interview.
Catherine chose it because she knew Victor would never ignore cry for help.
Manipulative.
But no captive.
Then Victor’s phone rang.
Catherine.
“I’m downstairs.”
He turned.
After fourteen years, Catherine stood at far end of mansion foyer.
Alive.
No dramatic sprint.
Victor simply stared.
She stared back.
Then she said:
“I’m sorry.”
Victor answered:
“That isn't enough.”
“I know.”
For first time in fourteen years, they were in same room.
But before Victor could ask another question, Catherine looked toward Eleanor.
“Tell him about Nell.”
Eleanor whispered:
“Not yet.”
Catherine’s expression changed.
“Then he needs to see photograph.”
“What photograph?”
Catherine reached into coat.
Eleanor suddenly stood.
“Catherine, don't.”
Catherine placed old photograph on table.
Victor looked down.
It showed himself at twenty-eight.
Unconscious on floor of mountain lodge.
Nell kneeling beside him.
