Chapter 12 - How Lily Got the Key
Daniel had lied about where key came from.
Lily received it from Catherine.
Two days earlier.
Daniel saw Lily coming downstairs with gold key.
He recognized family crest.
He asked where she got it.
Lily said:
“Lady upstairs.”
Daniel went to Room 17.
He found Catherine.
Alive.
That was why Daniel had been nervous from beginning.
He had known Catherine was back.
Victor nearly struck him but stopped himself.
“You looked me in face and let me think she might be dead.”
“She begged me for forty-eight hours.”
“Why?”
“To get documents before Eleanor knew.”
Daniel agreed because Catherine showed him forged letter and trust records.
He believed Eleanor might destroy evidence.
Daniel then told Lily to hide key.
Not because he was mastermind.
Because if Eleanor saw it, she would know Catherine had entered.
Why did Daniel restrict Lily’s food?
Again, no deliberate starvation scheme.
But he had been negligent and controlling.
After Lily wandered upstairs twice, Daniel told staff she was not to leave nursery or receive treats downstairs without permission.
Staff interpreted rigidly.
Eleanor reinforced rule.
Lily ended up genuinely hungry.
Daniel saw signs and failed to stop it.
His secrecy around Catherine made him prioritize controlling Lily’s movement over noticing child’s needs.
That failure remained his.
Victor did not excuse him because he was not mastermind.
Then why did Catherine give key to four-year-old?
Catherine admitted by letter she had not intended Lily to keep it.
When Lily wandered into Room 17, Catherine was startled.
She gave child key to hold while carrying archive box.
Lily ran off with it when voices approached.
Daniel found her.
A mundane accident became trigger that blew entire secret open.
But recorded cries for help were not accident.
Catherine activated them deliberately for dinner at 5:00.
Why?
If she could not retrieve archive safely, sound would force Victor upstairs.
A dramatic manipulation.
Victor was furious.
But effective.
What did Catherine want him to find?
Not herself.
A specific cabinet.
Number 18.
Inside investigators found medical claimant records and forged letter proof.
And another sealed box.

Gold key opened it.
Inside:
Catherine’s wedding ring.
A train ticket from night she left.
And seventeen letters addressed to Victor.
One for each year? She'd been gone fourteen, so no. Better fourteen letters.
Fourteen letters.
One written each anniversary of disappearance.
Never mailed.
Victor opened first.
Then second.
Every year Catherine considered returning.
Every year she stopped.
Some because of fear.
Later because of shame.
Later because she learned Victor had stopped publicly searching and assumed he hated her.
She had built her own prison.
The final letter was dated six weeks ago.
I AM COMING HOME.
But beneath it:
BEFORE I SEE YOU, ELEANOR MUST TELL YOU WHAT SHE DID AFTER I LEFT.
Victor looked at mother.
“We already know about forged letter.”
