Chapter 8 - Martin Vale’s Bonus

Northcrest accounting scandal ended with internal settlement.

Martin Vale cooperated.

He received immunity.

Then one year later he received $600,000 “retention and restructuring bonus.”

From Bennett Capital.

Authorized:

Samuel Bennett.

Why?

Official:

stayed through restatement.

Rebecca believed:

payment for altering her separation agreement and keeping her away from Northcrest ownership meetings.

If Rebecca returned as Hale beneficiary, she could challenge settlement terms.

Her stake had voting rights.

Keeping her legally “unavailable” allowed trustee to vote.

Martin allegedly altered separation documents to reinforce narrative she wanted no contact with family/business.

But did he have power over custody?

No.

Indirect.

The altered agreement was later presented in family court as evidence Rebecca voluntarily chose prolonged absence.

That could have influenced.

Huge.

Martin denied.

He said bonus was legitimate.

Then Vault 17 contained original compensation memo.

They needed open.

But biometric two-party:

Ethan + Rebecca.

Rebecca agreed.

Emma protested.

“You’re just going without me?”

Vault rules did not include Emma because Richard created before knowing if she wanted involvement? Could have named her, but maybe legal beneficiary status. Yet emotionally she should be present via counsel as observer.

Caroline arranged supervised viewing.

No one alone.

Claire insisted too.

Ethan said no.

Claire’s role limited; not entitled.

She could provide evidence later.

At bank, biometric access succeeded.

Vault 17 was not room of cash.

Rows of document cases.

Encrypted drives.

Original Northcrest ledgers.

Court correspondence.

The first file:

REBECCA HALE / FAMILY SEPARATION.

Original 1999 agreement.

90 days.

weekly supervised contact.

Altered copy:

12 months.

no contact.

Forensic comparison showed signature page physically detached and reattached to revised body.

Forgery-through-page substitution.

Who prepared?

Printer metadata impossible? But staple holes, paper batch. Then cover routing slip.

Prepared by:

M. VALE.

Reviewed:

S. BENNETT.

That implicated Martin and Samuel.

But not prove both knew alteration.

Next file:

Memo from Martin to Samuel.

“Extended absence strengthens trust’s interim voting authority.”

There.

Business benefit.

Next:

Samuel handwritten:

“Make it a year. She is not stable enough to return.”

No legal authority to alter signed agreement.

Strong evidence.

Martin and Samuel manipulated.

Richard discovered only in 2018? He thought separation legitimate earlier.

Why did he not catch then?

He relied Samuel and counsel.

Then Vault file showed Richard confronted Martin in 2019.

Martin admitted “document correction” but claimed Rebecca verbally agreed.

No proof.

Richard fired him from advisory role.

Why not prosecute?

Statute issues, reputational harm, and Rebecca refused participate.

Again secrecy.

Then biggest document:

Hale Family Holdings transfer.

Rebecca’s beneficial stake was never stolen.

Placed into protected trust for Emma.

Value in 2026:

$3.4 million.

Not giant empire.

Emma stared.

“I have a trust?”

Caroline said:

“You are contingent beneficiary. Control subject independent trustee.”

No instant power.

Money not central.

Then Emma looked at Rebecca.

“You stayed away while this sat here?”

Rebecca replied:

“I didn’t know how much. I didn’t care.”

Martin’s alleged motive partly financial:

his bonus tied to restructuring.

But larger: prevent challenge to Samuel’s settlement.

Then Emma asked:

“Why did you jump today?”

Ethan turned.

Finally.

Emma held gaze.

“Because I thought Vault would prove Richard stole my mother’s life.”

“And if it didn’t?”

She hesitated.

“I wasn’t ready for that.”

There.

May you like

She had planned stunt around a conclusion.

Like everyone else.
